I'm spoilt, I get to go to Egypt and buy it directly. Here though, I would check HabiRu's web-site, Scherezade Imports (google the spelling, sorry LOL), and of course E-Bay. Oh and Liquid Silver. Their stuff is beautiful but VERY pricey.

I just finished making an assuit hip panel belt this morning...some things to know about assuit..

    * You can actually wash it by hand or in the machine on gentle. Helps get the sizing out.

    * If it has stray pieces of metal (I call them hang nails) take a rolling pin and roll over the fabric! Flattens the metal out evenly.

    * You can spray mount it to a backing fabric (for my hip belt, I used a nice thick cotton backing and mounted and sewed the assuit to the top of it) That was it doesn't move while sewing and gets extra support for the mesh for fringe, tassels, coins..

    * Antique assuit is made from a metal that has a large quantity of silver in it, therefore it is heavier and will tarish. Storing it in a zip lock back will keep it from tarnishing more.

What do you mean by spray mount? I have panels that I want to back. Any tips?

Next question, who has covered a bra with assuit? Any tips?

I use Adhesive 77 which is a all purpose spray glue. Kind of like photo-mount spray. The trick is to spray as light as a coat as possible so that you do not gum up the fabric TOO much and get your machine needle all nasty.

Regarding bras.. I made a choi but the same rule apply, cut the cup on the bias or else you will have it get all bunchy. But then I have BIG boobs, so on a smaller bra if might not be as important :)

Remember if you plan on putting backing fabric on your assuit panel, that whatever you are wearing underneath will no longer be visible. I like the fact I can still see thru my panel, especially if I am wearing it over my brightly coloured pantaloons!

        Ooh, ooh, I did that!

My most recent costume has a velvet bra with the top of the cups covered in assuit. (I'm a bit busty, so I didn't want to overdue the silver-clad boob look. :-) ) The bra was not stretchy, so it was easy to do. If I were to the bottom two, I'd take two pieces of fabric cut larger than the area to be covered and then hand-sewn into place. I've tried the one-piece-of-fabric-add-a-dart-or-two-and-still-fail-to-get-a-flat-look thing and won't do it again. I usually decorate the top part of my bras anyway, so the seam is invariably covered. If you go to my photo album, you can see what I did. (It's the last pic, as of this writing.) I've since added small silver coins to the top-most part of the bra cup. The costume is evolving slowly but surely.

And, I love this list -- thanks for the sizing tip... I was resigned to scratchiness for the rest of my days, but now I don't have to be (well, at least not from the netting -- but I can remedy that with a simple rolling pin. COOL!)

Nice tips, thanks. But be careful with the spray
glue;it's a neurotoxin. We don't need to lose
good minds/people like you. I about destroyed mine
using it for a Mardi Gras crewe... GiGi

You've worked with that stuff, too? That's nothing compared to the crud I used to work with when I used to decorate Rose Parade floats. The stuff we had made you incredibly high, and we used to get people who glued their hands together or got their shoe permanently cemented to the floor. It was so bad we had to work with that glue in shifts. It's funny how house paint now just smells sweet to me....

Now we know why people are so happy
at early AM for the Rose Parade!! I guess the
flowers are petrified from the fumes & that's how
          they stay 'fresh' looking!?!

The reason those flowers stay so pretty looking is that they are all put on the two days before the parade, so they still look nice and fresh. Imagine it's 7 am, December 31, 20 floats in a warehouse with 5-8 people per float, and everyone's been up for twenty-four hours trying to stick these D@%& flowers on a on a 50'x20' float for the past two days.....tempers run reeeeaaally short those days.
