Screeeeeeeeeem!!!!!!
I have been in Ebay nightmare for the past two days trying to report a power seller and ebay store owner of The Spirit Room for copyright infringement using photos of a customized item I created and designed to sell their goods. A kind tribe sister alerted me to the infringement and Ebay of course makes it so very difficult to report. It's ironic how much time I"ve spent trying to report it when the individual just went to my website and dragged the photo onto their desktop and voila! began to post it on all their listings and the greater irony is that over my photo they've splashed their own www. web address as if the photo and the item is lawfully theirs. I guess I need to get really predefensive and put my own copyright brand on every photo of my websites! Its like defensive driving I guess.
This store owner has been reported here on tribe before for using dancer's images unlawfully and for selling Melodia knock offs, please don't buy from them. There are plenty of other Ebay sellers who sell mirror belts, cowries and kuchi costume jewelry that dancers can buy. It seems pretty normal to expect that someone would know you can't use a photo of someone else's custom designed image to sell your own goods without permission, and I understand humans make mistakes - I make many and have made many out of selfishness myself. On that level I understand, but huge corporate Ebay has me boiling. You can't talk to anyone directly and their link to another link to another to get to the right report place and preformatted email forms that don't fit the situation and won't send and fax numbers that are busy for hours and I mean hours make it very difficult for someone who's been infringed upon to get resolution. ARRRRRRGGGGGH!
Anyway thats my rant. I'm grateful for Spring in all her Divinity, for my honey bees - making the most amazing Santa CRuz nectar honey, for my body healing itself from pneumonia, for all the beautiful spirits who use dance to pray, to vision, to heal, to connect, to celebrate, to go deeper and for Pema Chodron my teacher (hey buy her cd teachings now - you'll never regret it) and for the abundance I live in everyday.

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:52 AMDitto...What's your website. I need a few items myself! Take care of those honey bees. i don't know where you are (I guess I could go look at your profile) - but we're already seeing what the loss of these little workers is doing. It's gotten pricey to buy local honey here when you don't have hives of your own and more of those are dying. -

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 11:39 AMYou should definintely post about this on the BD Boycotts tribe: tribes.tribe.net/bellydancerboycotts
ps...you can't actually keep someone from downloading photos from your website entirely (that's how a website works, when you view the photos, your computer automatically downloads a copy of that image to your computer's temporary files). But you can disable the right-click ability on your website. That will at least deter the less-knowledgeable people from being able to "save-as" your photos on your site. -

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 12:03 PMHey Bellatrix,
how do you disable the 'save-as'? I've had problems with people taking stuff off our site too.
I shoot all our own pics, and I hate it when people just take them (knowingly). -

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 11:39 AMThat really bites.
I feel bad, I've bought from them some buttons and kuchi headpieces within the last couple of months.

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 12:25 PMThat sux! Last week I was looking at some of their stuff too. Grrr!
But if they are gonna pull that kind of crap, they just lost a customer & I'll darn well let them know it too! Which pic is it so I can tell them to their cyber faces?
What your site, I'd love to see that!

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 1:20 PMBelieve it not, I'm not trying to drum up business for myself by saying this. I just think you should know. By looking at some of their jewelry I'm thinking they have the same supplier I have and not only do they suck for copyright infringement but they over inflate their prices too.
It really pisses me off that they did that, for selfish reasons too. I'm trying to get myself up and running and because I have to photograph the things that images aren't supplied for, which I'm not very good at and have to do over and over to get right, It is taking forever! I have two boxes of stock that for 4 days I haven't been able to even open yet because I refuse to pilfer items I do not have permission to use. My site would be a lot fuller a lot faster if I did things the dishonest way. Money is just too damn important to too many people and honest people pay for it. -

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 1:34 PMI agree it takes forever to get stuff up onto the site.
We import our own jewelry, some is made for us, some is vintage, but we shoot *all* of it. I know some sellers don't always give you the same piece as in the pic so they think they may as well take someone elses because a lot of it does look alike,( tho not identical.)
Personally I think having a unique store means having a cohesive look in your photos by taking your own pics, maybe with a certain backdrop or pose.
It might take longer, but it's ~yours~.
When you have your own photo shoot and paying models it sucks that others are profiting off your work.

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 6:58 AMI also went looking for your website. Is it the costume link through heavyhips.com? Some nice stuff on there, but everything is sold out :/
Sorry you are having these troubles!! You should put watermarks on your photos, right across the image. You can add these in photoshop very easily and they can't be removed that easily. I don't think, heh...good luck! -

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 7:13 AMOn tribal bay marketplace in the photo section, the moderator posted a photo of Sandy from FCBD. Picture 231. It looks like the bottom half of this photo has been posted on The spirit rooms website regarding banjara skirts. Have a look and see if I am crazy. -

Sat, May 3, 2008 - 8:16 AMTry my friend Yasemin. She has a tribe called tribal bazaar and here is a link to her website www.tribalbazaar.com You should join her tribe. It's a blast. If only to see Paul in all his new clothes. -

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 8:43 AMThanks Annie - I do have some full size skirts in stock, just need to add more to the website.
Bellatrix told me how to disable the 'save-as' feature, but I had thought of adding watermarks too. (not sure how to do that either).
It's amazing, given the interconnected world of Tribal dance that someone would take images without permission, and think that no ill will would come of it. Or maybe they just think it's worth it. -

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 8:53 AMHey, Yasemin asked about disabling the save as on the pics for your site. Problem being that people can hi-light it and copy it like a document and then transfer THAT to what ever image software they have. You can partially protect, but all in all, it can still happen. Watermarks are going to be the best defense, because it's almost impossible to get rid of them without having the original file.
And some people just do this because they make something vaguely similar, and they want to say "I make that item, but cheaper" when really, it's some sort of half-assed version you really wish you hadn't ordered. -

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 9:04 AMI'm going to see if I can learn to put Watermarks on our pics (at least for the future, since we have hundreds up now. Hate to go back and do them all ;-)
I just ran across another of what looks like one of our pics (not the Spirit room, tho ) from another source.
Maybe by doing both it will deter having them lifted.
~I'm trying not to highjack this thread, but at least the disscussion keeps it at the top for more to see ;-)~ -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 9:12 AMI think it is a very important discussion. Some people do things out of ignorance and some just don't give a rat's ass. I think it very important we know the rats so we can make the best decisions on who we want to do business with. -

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 12:28 PMRe. the watermarks... not only are they hard to get rid of, they also turn every picture someone does steal (I like to collect "morgues" of dance and costume pictures for inspiration) into a little flyer for your website. If it does get re-distributed to someone else, it's basically still advertising you.

Re: copyright infringment ebay again - please don't buy supplies from The Spirit Room
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 2:34 AMThat sucks.
It's odd that an ebay seller would use a picture of a custom costume, afterall, he isn't selling it--right?
I would try contacting the seller directly and simply notify him that you do not wish your picture to be used unless he intends to
buy and resell your products. I imagine contacting the seller will be much easier than going thru ebays customer service links--yuck.
On the other hand, you can always compete with him on ebay, afterall, you are the maker...
