Re: earring question...
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 8:52 AMOoo very pretty stuff on folkvision - a new place to spend money! LOL!!
Believe it or not, the JC Penny store near me had some very nice, very tribal-y jewelry a few weeks ago. Not exactly like these pieces, but lightweight enough to wear comfortably, and more important for some people, surgical stainless steel posts.
I've also found a lot of chunky, ethnic or tribal style stuff at garage sales and flea markets. These pieces were inexpensive when they were new, so they're actually hollow! making them VERY lightweight and comfortable to wear even for long periods.

Re: earring question...
Sat, October 31, 2009 - 10:12 AMIt's nice when the weight is listed. I keep wanting to try and compare the earring weights to how much my favorite pair weighs and I don't have a kitchen or postal scale so it's hard to compare.
Here's something I looked up before to try and give me an idea of how to compare the weights listed to something tangible I could put in my hands here at home.
This way if a set of earrings is listed as being about 20 grams, I can put a couple quarters in each hand and see if that feels light enough for me. I don't like to put much weight in my ears either.
Cent - 2.5 grams
Nickel - 5 grams
Dime - 2.27 grams
Quarter - 5.67 grams
Half Dollar - 11.34 grams
Dollar (SBA) - 8.1 grams -

Sat, October 31, 2009 - 10:25 AMThanks, hope it helps someone!
I really love some of the ones on folkvision but I like to know the gauge of them too...some of them look a lot thicker than standard earrings but they don't list the gauge at all.
I would just gauge my ears a bit, but my hubby thinks it's unattractive. Psh. What does he know anyway? -

Re: earring question...
Sat, October 31, 2009 - 3:10 PMYou can stretch just a step or two and no one will notice. I have an 8g & a 10g and people still have to do a double take when I tell them I have stretched my ears a bit.
My hubby fussed when I started stretching until I showed him the hoop widths. -

Re: earring question...
Sat, October 31, 2009 - 5:59 PMActually, thank you for mentioning that. I went and double checked with him because it's been a while since our initial gauging conversation. He had agreed that he wouldn't mind a few small steps up so I could wear some of the nifty tribal hoops. Originally the discussion started because I like the look of smallish tunnels and such and I guess the tunnels are a bit much for him.
That still leaves the question of how to figure out what gauges the folkvision earrings are. They seem to really vary.
I could probably handle heavier earrings with a larger gauge. Smaller wires on heavier earrings are more likely to tear and cause discomfort, I think. -

Re: earring question...
Sun, November 1, 2009 - 6:40 PMjust dont wear the heavy stuff for extended periods, and you shouldnt have any trouble! if you do want to wear them a lot, youll have to just stretch a little bigger than your hubby might like, and wear some thin silicone ear skins to help support the weight of the jewelry! check these out, theyre suuuper thin so you can wear stuff through them...
oh darn, i was going to link you to body art forms, but their site is goofed up right now!
