HELP-- SCA/LARP bra link?

topic posted Thu, July 3, 2008 - 1:24 PM by  Megan
hey everyone,

A few months ago someone posted a link to this website where they made these bra and belt sets for LARP and SCA events. They came in different colors and they were actuallly rubber even though they looked metal. Does anyone have ANY idea what I'm talking about and what the link might be?

Oh, that's funny- I know that guy; he just moved out of L.A. a few months ago and I used to go to parties at his house. He makes really interesting stuff.

OHMYGOD- check out the "For Pets" section- he's got armored pugs!

Just gotta stick my nose in cause I keep getting questions like this myself from customers -
We are clear that a dance bra, no matter how much kuchi and embroidery it contains, isn't really period for the SCA, right? Although there are lots of dancers wearing them. And as much as I'm dying for an OrganicArmor set, there's not a single thing on that dance page I'd wear to an SCA event. But then, I've had "the look" a few times, and "the talk" from a great many SCAers - "bellydancer is not a persona" and so on. And they are usually complaining about gwazhee coats and cholis...
Other LARP games, I can't speak to.
Personally, if I'm going to push the boundaries, I'm going to do the Once in a Blue Moon metal boob armor. TOO hot. I think the SCA folks might be less picky if it's steel like their fighting gear.

Those bra and belt sets are perfect for most LARPs that have a significant fantasy element to them; not so good for SCA events, though. They'd impinge on the "period" atmosphere some folks work very hard on setting up. The "period high" some people aim for comes out of looking at a scene that looks like it comes straight from a medieval miniature or Renaissance painting.

If it's an indoor court-based event, I go for more formal garb. If it's outdoors, I'll drag out the ghawazee coats but I have been aiming away from kuchi-decorated and mirrored bras and tassel belts (unless it's a Renaissance faire with non-SCA folks in attendance). Rajasthani mirrored cholis and lengha (circle skirts decorated with mirrored embroidery) will also do. In short: I've found that if I wear stuff that covers the tops of my boobs, I don't get sunburned cleavage after a long day. :-)

Generally, I find folks have been very nice about the non-periodness about what I've worn. That's because if they ask me if it's period I cheerfully admit that it isn't. This really disarms a lot of people.
