  Specifically, what I'm confused about is how to space out the ruffles. I know how to gather, and I have some cool fabrics that will look great at the bottom of the pants I made this morning, but I don't know really how to do the layered ruffles.
  
  Any suggestions?

    basically you should start with the bottom gatered fabric place it 2" below the bottom edge of the trouser and depending on the drop of the gathered fabric just space out 5" above the bottom ruffled layer etc this will give you the layered look.

  i have been wanting to make some also...i started some, and i used quik sew pattern 3443, yoga pants. i am just going to wing it at the bottom part...i will make the flair part separate from the pants, sew circle ruffles on them, and then attach them to the rest of the pants. haven't done the math for the ruffles yet...i hate math!

    Do you mean you want to know how to decide how high to place the top layer in reference to the bottom one? I would just sort of eyeball it. Maybe having the bottom of the top layer fall at about the halfway mark on the bottom layer.
    
    Cindy, you shouldn't have to do any complicated math for the ruffles. Generally 3 times the with of the base fabric gives nice full ruffles.
