so i have been saving up to order a pair of melodia's for about a while now. i've been daydreaming about dancing in a pair of sash pants and pinching my pennies.

last week, i was ready to order. i got on the website and went to add to cart... i was forwarded to a page stating that they didn't have the requested item in my size. i tried every single color in every single style in my size on the website. THEY DIDN'T HAVE A SINGLE ITEM IN MY SIZE! (M)

i was pissed! so i called their store! the lady tells me, "oh yeah we're out of a lot of the LARGER sizes in most of our styles right now but we're launching a new line at the end of the week!"

(LARGER SIZES?!!)

whatever.

anyway, i go back to the site this weekend to check out the "new line"... it's not posted.

as of today, guess what... IT'S STILL NOT POSTED.

i'm so not ordering from melodia designs.

ever.

the end.

I've been hearing bad things about the new management and that the quality of the product has gone down. I haven't ordered from them recently so can't vouch for that myself but I do agree that the way they have their website set up (i.e. you can't see what's available) is really not user-friendly.

I know that Desert Dancer makes flare pants in a similar style; I've never purchased any so I don't know how they compare but I do know they're fairly popular.

I also have a number of Desert Dancer flares and very happy with them. But I ordered a few years ago, and in the meantime the company changed hands, so I have no experience with the new owner, but haven't heard anything bad about her, and sounds like the original owner researched her well and worked together with her awhile, so probably just fine. Very good about things like tweaking the measurements for my own proportions, good communication, etc.

I have been looking at their tops and they haven't had anything available in months! A dancer I met recently had one and I tried it on, they are tiny! I'm about a medium or a 6-8 on top and the tops are supposed to be one size fits all.

Interesting discussion, I just got my pair of XL Melophonix garter stripes, the ONLY size left was XL a friend was with me when ordering, could have used a small and nothing was left, go figure. It is unsettling when a company gets so popular and large that they can't handle the business, we all expect great service and when they fail to meet our expectations, it is bad for us all!

i had a similiar experience with a local goth store i go in and ask hey i am looking for some leopard shorts or maybe plaid, what does this ASSHOLE say? he looks at me up and down and says "ugh.. we only have them size small" WTF DOES THAT MEAN? i didnt even tell him my size, and what if i was going to buy a present? im tired of people making clothes that dont fit the average chick, no one i know is a size small!

This is what happens when small time and creative becomes big time production crap. when people stop enjoying their work, and when it becomes "work" there is no point in going forward any more. Its no longer art.

People keep telling me to hire an assistant. and I keep telling them to go suck a fat one. (oh goodness, I'm such a redneck!)

People dont mind waiting a few weeks for a custom item, and those items that I do have pre-made are always of the highest quality and made with pure enjoyment and love (and I feel that this conveys into how the items feel while on the body... its woo woo stuff... but ya)

I am keeping my prices affordable without making them insanely cheap to where I dont make any money. (I see this sooooo often, it makes me sad)

I use the money from my etsy shop and regular website to pay for vet bills, feed and other care for my rescue horses. I'm happy when I have extra left over so I can buy goodies for myself...

When the Customer Service takes a nose dive, its time to move on. But people are going to still buy from her because she's "melodia" kinda sad...

I haven't had much luck with the site as well, so I am taking a break for awhile and HOPEFULLY, things will be better.

I am a size 5 and I tried to get a pair of flairs from a different online and vendor. They referred me to another site because as the email stated, 'their clothes are for petite women and they do not have plans to cater to larger sizes'.

I hope I can toot my own horn here. I cater to all sizes, small to plus sizes. No Etsy store yet. But you can see my work in the photo section under my profile. I will be at Tribal Fusion Fair in Dec. If I can help anyone, I would be happy to. Thanks

We love our pants from By Ro Dancewear and By Ro Designs. Check out our pics! Ro makes us look super fabulous and we get lots of complements. Because we are a youth troupe Ro does have to make special orders for us but she doesn't seem to mind and she is always very helpful. Best of all the pants are very comfortable! Can't wait to see the new designs!!!

Wait, what??? A size 5 is 'large'??? Since when??? Are they making clothes for munchkins or something? I'm a size 3-5 and I still occasionally get the 'oh, I HATE you...you're so tiny!' So, I guess these people would consider a size 7-9 a plus size? Some seriously fucked up people in this world!!!

I didn't get what they meant either so I emailed the owner back. In her second email she flat outright stated that her S is for 4-6 but really fits a size 2-3 and that they don't carry anything above a M. So what size does the small fit if the M really fits a 2-3?

I still get people who make fun of my size and say things like 'it must be so hard to find clothes and I wish I was your size". There is no right body type and there is no perfect size. All women deserve to look foxy in their clothes. Screw the size restrictions.

I stole that from my mother who started belly dancing at 68 years old and she is size 20. When she leaves the house, she says 'I know I look foxy - end of story'. She taught all 6 of us girls that beauty comes in all different packages.

That's a good momma right there. Started dancing at 68? And my 48-year-old mother thinks it's too late to start now...yeah, right. :-P That's what I love about the bellydance community, man. Such strong, feisty ladies we have around us to set the best example.

My mother's belly dance troupe is called the 'Old Bitties"-they are all over the age of 60 and they are widowers. 4 of the 6 women including my mother, uses a cane or walker. Her favorite designer is shimmy sista because she caters to larger women.

She has recently become a fan of Geisha Moth because of her really creative accessories.

I started at 40...you're never too old to have fun and feel good about yourself...and hey, it definitely keeps you in great shape, no matter what size you are! I looooooves my dancing!!! It's the only real exercise that I've ever been able to stick with and not get completely bored!

i have a pair of desert dancer flare pants
    www.desertdancer.com
    and they are great
i'm going to have to get another pair of them now because i accidentally cut them, but you dont feel like it's something you have to get a mortgage for =p

    try desertdancer
i also see now she makes ruffle skirts like black sheep/wild card belly dance wear :)
    squeeee

alot of the bigger name designers are doing this whole "we can't accomodate large sizes because you dudes just cost too much"
well really since when is a medium a large size
BUT we have to have SOMETHING to wear
and if the big names aren't going to do it, and just make loads and loads of XS and S size clothes, then we'll take our money elsewhere, even if it's to a "knock off"

and the thing about "knock offs" is they are usually just as well made. with just as much time and effort and conscience and love for the garment as the bigger names/prices. the difference is, i can afford them and actually ENJOY them, rather than just stare at other people wearing them.

my rant for the day. =p

p.s. maral makes some glorious costumes
had a nice moment staring at her site the other day

oh and by the way--medium is NOT a larger size. Hopefully she was just referring to the other half of their available sizes ( S/XS vs. M/L)

as a bigger woman, it's kind of funny how much people are getting rankled by being called a "larger" size. technically, larger means bigger than something else. if you're a size 0 and someone else is a size 1, the 1 would be the larger size.

i'm only pointing out this bit of semantics to show how fruitless it is to categorize some of us as "normal sized" (and therefore deserving of beautiful clothing) and others of us as "larger sized" (and therefore deserving to be left in the cold). chances are we're all larger than someone else and we all deserve beautiful pants to dance in. so let's leave this discussion of who's actually larger and who's actually not out of it.
        • Re: melodia bitchfest... please excuse me...

          Mon, November 9, 2009 - 10:29 PM
I don't think anyone is really getting upset over being called a 'larger' size, but that we're just baffled at what is being considered to be a larger size...there are beautiful and fabulous dancers of all sizes and it's not fair for us tiny women to be the only ones able to have the beautiful, fabulous clothes to go along with it...I don't believe that there is a 'normal' size...maybe there is an 'average' size, but even that is pretty open for interpretation.

That being said, it's really no easier to be on the small end of the spectrum, either...even tiny women have different body shapes and the main one I have always had to endure is my height...I'm 5'2" and I can never get anything that's not waaaay too long! Sure, you can hem some things with no problem and I was even able to just cut off a couple pairs of flares that I got, since the fabric doesn't ravel and most are made to look lettuce edged, anyhow...but when it comes to the multi-yard skirts, I'm pretty much out of luck...I end up having to roll the waistline so much that I look like I've got a swimmy float around my waist! Yes, those can be corrected, too...but I'm not enough of a seamstress to do it myself and unless I do get one custom made (which as a single mother, I generally can't afford), I either end up tripping over them or looking like a little girl trying to wear her mother's clothes!

Sooo, I can sympathise with having a problem finding clothes that fit...whether they're too long or too short, not big enough or small enough in the chest/shoulders/waist/butt...whatever...there's always something and I think all of us reserve the right to bitch about it!

Thank you for bringing this up! I agree with you. I'm about 5'9", which means I'm on the tall side, but I weigh so little that I'm very small for my height. Which sounds like a blessing -- you know, fast metabolism and all that -- but I'm actually technically underweight and can't seem to gain enough wait to bring myself to a normal build. Bellydance has given me such an appreciation for women with a fuller figure that I find myself wishing I weighed more so I could fill out the costumes better and dance with more "oomph." :-P As it is, I look bony when I dance. And the costuming is many times too short (I have long legs as compared to my rather short torso) or too large to fit around my waist like it should, particularly anything with an elastic band, and I fear shimmies in the choreography and might send my skirts and belts slithering down to the floor.

Granted, most of the costumers out there make garments for my size and end up calling everything else "the larger stuff" almost diminutively. But I'm here to tell you, straight from the heart, that I wish I was one of the "larger sizes." <3

i wasn't really upset with what she said, it was the way she said it that bothered me... and the fact that she made such a statement at all.

rather than saying, "oh we are out of most of our stock right now"...?

anyway, i'm over it... i'm glad to NOT be a melodia designs costumer.

Just try to be sure with 'knockoffs' that the money is going to the right people, i.e. not sweatshops in Asia. Small designers get ripped off this way; it's a double-edged sword. Customers want low prices, but manufacturing in North America is expensive because the people doing the work need to get paid at least minimum wage. Sometimes indie designers feel they have no choice but to have things manufactured overseas in order to keep their prices affordable, but then the overseas manufacturer will actually produce copies and sell them for cut-rate prices.

I prefer to support independent designers so that I know my money is going to the actual artisan, and encourage people to remember that time is money - the artisan making the item has to pay themselves a decent hourly wage, PLUS small companies usually cannot afford to buy fabric in bulk directly from manufacturers so fabric costs are high too.

whats affordable about $80 for a pair of dance pants. I just ordered 2 pairs from Melodia because I thouhght they were high quality and made by the designer, not some chinese sweat shop. Sigh, I hope they are worth it when they finally get here.

Not to be mercenary, but I have a pair of size LX flare pants up now, which should fit a 20-22, in black lycra, and a set in velveteen snakeskin print. And I can take custom orders for even larger pants.
I have some wine velveteen glitter dot fabric I'd love to make into something amazing, but I don't want to cut it unless it has a good home to go to. That with some sheer black layered ruffles at the hip would be incredible.

Clearly in this case you're paying for the name. I'm sure they started as all handmade but as demand grew things changed.

I don't know anything about Melodia's profit margin or costs so I try not to criticize too much, since I get the 'your prices are too high" complaint myself sometimes yet I know I'm often *under*pricing my stuff. In this case, however, if the quality has indeed gone down while prices stay the same/go up then I guess we just vote with our wallets and go elsewhere.
