Re: Afghanistan's Hidden Treasures
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 9:29 AMAll those artifacts are so beautifully made. Seeing it makes me wonder how anyone in their right mind would want to willingly destroy it. It's such a shame. I wish people could practive their ideals without having to destroy others' in order to do so, especially in periods of wartime. Besides the lamentable loss of life, waste of money and sheer disrespect for your fellow human, fighting forces have no respect for the ground they walk on. Why station snipers on the Malwiya Minaret only to damage it? Why raid the National Museum of Iraq? Why destroy the Buddhas of Bamyan? Why burn the Klimt paintings in the University of Vienna? These little traces of human history, slowly being erased at the hands of those who refuse to understand it. It saddens me.
Sorry to rant. -

Re: Afghanistan's Hidden Treasures
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 9:36 AMGood points Laura.. It's a mystery to me too...
But also keep in mind that history is rewritten by the victors every time.. It's nothing new you know???? One thing that i admired the USSR for was the fact that they did keep most of the Tsarist artifacts, like palaces and statues... We viisited there in 1982 and everywhere we went they were showing off thier past... Convents and Churches too.. Even the Kremlin itself was a Tsarist palace.. The Hermitage is spectacular!! Perhaps it was easier then when the goverment had all the money it needed but i sure hope that they still continue to fix and repair them even today...
