tattoos and stretch marks?

topic posted Tue, May 6, 2008 - 9:12 AM by  Liliana
hello..
So i'm 19. I was a fat little kid (stil rather curvy lol) and i have stretch marks on my tummy - not the "oh so white you can't see me" kind, but the "lets take a glaring red marker and doodle on this girls poor stomach" kind. I would like to get tats to cover them up, but 1) how well does this work? 2) when i eventaully want kids, would the new pregnancy stretch marks destroy my new lovely ink? or 3) any ideas on how to get rid of stretch marks?

usually tattoos over stretch marks and/or scarring does not go so well.
the ink does not take well to them :(
on occasion it can work, but more times than not your skin will reject the ink on the marked area

(i know b/c i used to apprentice at a tat shop)

I saw a show on discovery or someplace that featured women getting huge gorgeous tattoos that covered scars. I think it was mastectomy patients in recovery or something. Anyway their scars were pretty big and the tattoos covered beautifully. I know it depends on the quality of ink used and the skill of the artist besides the condition of the scarring. I would go to a shop and ask a tattoo artist. Find a good one and let them see the stretch marks first hand. they would know how to answer your questions.

Tattooing can and has been done beautifully over stretch marks/scars. Your best bet is to find someone who's experienced in it, because it IS a little different than tattooing over unmarred skin.

However, if you're planning on getting pregnant eventually, you may want to wait on the tattooing. New scars/stretch marks over a previously done tattoo CAN mar the surface, not to mention the stretching of the skin in general can screw up your tattoo.

I know some women vouch for rubbing scars/stretch marks daily with vitamin E oil or Mederma ointment to minimize their appearance, but I really have no knowledge or experience in that area.

I also second what Amber's said about waiting until AFTER you have kids someday to get tattoos where they're likely to stretch due to childbirth. If you're really apprehensive about your stretch marks but still want to dance with a middriff-showing top, have an artsy fartsy friend do some really awesome henna on you. Henna's fun and usually takes over scar tissue (test a little spot first just to make sure!). Just an idea! :D

Another agreement, wait until after babies. Tattooing over scars, I've never had trouble. Not an 'keeping ink' issue over stretch marks either.

I just had a tat done on my right breast which had pregnancy related stretch marks long since faded. The tattoo looks great. I happened to ask the artist about when girls get tattoos on their tummies and then get pregnant. She said since the skin is actually tearing, the tattoo will, as well. Like the others advise, definitely wait till after the babies.

Instead of going the tattoo route quite yet, you are young and may want to have children, catastrophy waiting to happen, why don't you try treating the stretch marks?

While you can't make them disappear completely, with proper skin care and moisturization, you can lessen the appearance of them. There are a million products out there and some actually are effective. Ask your doctor or dermatologist for some names or recommendations. Start by using a good quality body lotion a couple of times a day on them. It isn't a quick fix, but over the long run, it may help.

Save the tattoos for after you've had your kids and really want to make a statement.

Wow, learn something new every day!

I always thought that ink over scars didnt take from what all the artists i worked with said.
glad to know it can more than i thought! :)

As for your tummy marks, what one of my friends did after she had her baby was get those vitamin e pills (liquid kind) and pop them open and use that. i dont know how different that would be from creams?
Other than that try cocoa butter, if you have not already.

Hi, I had a large rose tattoo done over my right hips where there were stretch marks when I was 27 years old. I 'm not 58 years old, and back then the tattooing hurt worse than having a baby. My tattoo took back then but it was so bad, that I would rather have had another baby instead of the tattoo.
