I'm about to choreograph a song written in the 1920s and performed by Fannie Brice among others. I am needing some costuming ideas because the ideas I'm coming up with aren't very good. I want to incorporate a fedora and some long strings of pearls and I want to look 1920s with a funky twist. I've got the makeup thing down, but I'm just not getting a grip on costuming.
Thanks for the help

Re: suggestions for costume
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 9:50 AMIt's going to be a belly dance. I wasn't planning to combine styles, although I probably could. I want to do it as a belly dance.

Tue, May 6, 2008 - 10:41 AMhm.... forego the stereotypical Flapper and go for gypsy... like if a Romanian peasant girl wandered into the jazz club fresh from a village festival and had to strip down a bit. just a thought...

Re: suggestions for costume
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 12:11 PMFedoras were most popular, and most associated with, in the 1940s. If you want to get a happy median where the fedora will mesh with a 1920s song (which even if wrote in the 20s a good part of America wouldn't have even heard of it until the 30s anyway) I would check out the art of George Hurrell. Though a lot of it is probably a bit glamour puss for what you want, it still incorporates the "feel" of the era. Unless of course the song is a Charleston or something. That pinpoints an era more. What is the song? -

Tue, May 6, 2008 - 7:26 PMMy first vision was really different when I decided to go ahead and do a more period costume combined with bellydance costuming.
The song is Second Hand Rose. -

Tue, May 6, 2008 - 7:43 PMI love that song! I think you should do a bag lady look. Or maybe the way a really eccentric granny looks!

Tue, May 6, 2008 - 7:58 PMOR check out some of the images of the Ziegfeld Follies since Fanny Brice performed it there it should give you bunches of inspiration. The Follies had the best costumes ever!

Re: suggestions for costume
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 4:50 AMI am really getting into this era as well. I have to acquaint myself with the fashion a little more though.
I can't make up my mind as to whether I want a bag lady look or "I'm trying to be elegant, even though everything is used" look. I need to do more research. Thanks for the links and I'm sure I'll come up with something soon. I already have my pearls! <G>
