Covering a Bra: A Costume Tutorial

Hi all!

I made this quick (and very very very simple) photo tutorial on how to cover a bra for a costume. Thought it might help some folks out here, too. The photos aren't so great as my home lighting is odd, but I think the point gets across. I'll be adding a few more photos in a bit to show how the final decorated bra turned out, but so far you can at least get the entire process of the step-by-step. if you all like it, i'd be happy to do some more soon (like how to do a cabaret mermaid skirt, how to make a panel skirt, etc). I know the resources are online already, but I find the actual photos help me a lot too.

ps - yes, this is SO for a pastel and furry tribal fusion costume. i confess. sue me. ha!

that was nice - i had not thought to try to cover the cup in two separate pieces of fabric instead of a single piece that i have been using!
those were great pics, and i second the video turtorial idea!
    thank you.

So. I have a question... correction. Two.

      1. What is the white stuff you trace, pin and sew to the exhisting bra band?

      2. How do you maintain the any elasticity in the sides? In my experiance if I replace them with ribbon I feel like I can't breath when I get them to an exceptable tightness for support.

      =)

Or I could just be a retard and not actually read the commentary. (I just watched the slide show, which does not include the commentary)

My second question still stands though... !

By the way, it's totally awesome. I love it!

I do not remove the sides and back. I leave them in place and slip them inside tubes of fabric. Each tube is the distance from the cup to the center back plus three inches (you might need a little more or less).

I hem one end of one tube. Then I push one side of the bra through the tube, so the raw (unhemed) end meets the cup and the hemmed end is at the back fastener. I sew the tube to the cup. Then I do the same thing on the other side.

When I put the bra on, I pull the fastener ends of the bands out through the tubes and hook it. Then I push the tube with the raw end inside the tube with the hemmed end, adjust the tubes so the back band is completely hidden inside the tubes. The extra inches allow the band to stay hidden inside the tubes even when stretched.

For a halter bra, you're done. But I like criss cross straps to support the girls, so I put the bra on, adjust it the way I want it to be, then sew the straps to the band and tube.

        1. The white stuff I use is either duckcloth (super heavy weight) or sometimes muslin if I get desparate and don't have anything heavier handy. SOMETIMES I'll use bluejean fabric if I have a pair to cut up - it's super strong and tough and will work quite nicely.

        2. We-ell, actually, I don't wory about it. Because I'm adding the duckcloth for support I lengthen it so that it goes past the original length of the bra. Then this entire thing is covered - that way it can simply overlap in the back and hook.

When I use ribbon, I don't cut off the entire sides. I leave just enough to wrap around my ribs so that it just barely comes to my back and then thread the ribbon through. I'll try to post photos soon! If this isn't clear, Basha, please ask more and I'll be happy to help.

I get the covering idea... it's more the elasticity issue. I have worked w/ duck cloth (somethin equivielant) and has zero give. The first bra i made had no give and I found it horribly uncomfortable. sewing the cloth to the bra sides would eliminate the elasticity...

lol or does that not bother you at all! I'm kind of fond of breathing, that and I really hate the look of the muffin top I get when I get the bra band the appropriate tightness and there isn't any stretch!

I'm getting geared up mentally to make another one and I'm trying to make it as professional as possible... hence my ridiculous abundance of questions!

I think the duck-cloth is just in a tube around the original bra band, it's only sewn to the bra nearest the cup end and is longer so that the bra band can still stretch to fit you comfortably, while still covering the back fastening. If you get what i mean?

nah she sews it directly onto the side band part.... reinforcing. that' what the pink thread is showing.

I mean it's not an exact science, and there are more than one way to do it, just trying to get a better idea to make it ... well. better! I was reasonably satisfied with the last one I made... it didn't quiet *look* all together there as far as asthetics, but it is very comfortable. (the cup/band section is a little raw looking but its under the arm so I was more concerned at that point getting it done than making it pretty)

                Basha-
Helen's idea of *tubes* works good ((been there / done that ;-D ))
                - and -
there's keeping the side strap stretched out while stitching your fabric to it - use whatever is handy that has the same measurment as your ribcage - I've heard metal buckets work great!! ((been there / done that, too - except I have a dress dummy named "Mabel" ;-D ))

I haven't tried the tube method yet... the last one I did I did the stretch as you sew.... that was fun (I didn't have a bucket, or a dress form... so knees it was!) I might try that tube method...

is it more difficult to pull it all together when you are all said and done and actually wearing it? I might try that, I like the idea of not actually altering the bra band itself!

It's fairly easy to slide the little tubes around - a little tougher if it's tight or a "grippy" type of fabric. It's one of those things you might have a dance-mate, or friend, check - just in case.

I do indeed sew the duck cloth directly onto the sides of the bra. For me, that's the "super quick easy way" to do it. So, when I'm in panic mode over needing a costume ASAP, I'll do that and sew it with a machine and wind up with a nice, strong strap. I do this, too, because usually I put tons of deocrations on the bra and even sometimes on the sides so I want a nice strong band to support the cups. There are TONS of other ways to make the sides - the tube is a great idea! - and I'll try to post some photos soon of other ways to do it.

One idea that might work for you: sew using the ZIGZAG setting on your machine. If you use this, or a smilar stretchy-stich, your bra will stil stretch as long as the material you use has give. It works wonderfully with crushed velvet! If you skip the duck cloth, you can cover with crushed velvet and stich over in zigzag and have plenty of stretchy breathing room.

A note on elasticity: remember, most mass-produced cabaret bedlahs never have stretchey sides (or at least the 15+ that I have don't! if they're out there I'd love to find them!) so I guess I'm just used to wearing those and as such make my bras in much the same way when I'm building a costume. :)

Ok Basha :) This may or may not help you, but it's an alternative...

Here's a quick and dirty description on one type of alternative strap: the criss-cross bra strap.

I'll try to do an elasticized one for you soon!

            • I was thinking about that... I haven't had my hands on a lot of cab costuming... and I have been sifting through a lot of the material.. and I said... self... I bet they aren't elastic... because most of them are sequened and beaded most of the way around!

I think I am going to go with a sugar petals set and see what I can come up with... I'm wondering if I don't like mine because the way I did it was to 'tight' for having no stretch to it.

Oh geez. the sleeves were RIDICULOUSLY easy. seriously. you'd all kill me if you knew what it took to make them.

i'm working on a new ren faire costumey bra and belt set that's going to be conscripted into pirate wear...maybe if i can i'll do that!
