Patterns?

topic posted Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:53 AM by  Amalia
I am so frustrated right now!

I am looking for at least a basic pattern for a dance bra or halter
and so far ive taken others advice and got generic patterns from the Jo Ann store and whatnot (mostly for halters)
and nothing is working thus far!! They are too weak/thin, or just dont fit right...

any suggestions on where to find patterns? (on line or otherwise)
or good hints for making my first bra and/or halter?

Im about to scream at this point.

Is there anyone who can help you with fitting? Close-fitting tops like this need to fit well, and patterns generally aren't that precise unless you happen to luck out and find one exactly suited for your shape.

    Hi AMILIA

I now of a good solution , if you have a good fitting bra and you dont mind cutting it then the thing to do is cut the arm straps out and replace them with suitable fabric, long enough so that you caN TIE THEM AS TIGHT OR AS LOOSE AS YOU PREFER AROUND THE NECK
AND THE SAME WITH THE BRA STRAPS CUT THEM OUT AND SEW A GOOD STRONG MICRO FIBRE MATERIAL TIES FOR TIEING AROUND THE BACK

Unfortunately, ANY sort of pattern isn't going to fit you perfectly off the bat. If you really want them fitted and supportive, make them out of a strong knit in one size too small

I am rather hefty in the chest area and I just have to fit everything AFTER I make it. Yes you could chase after a muslin and make that first. But unfortunately, cheap cotton doesn't behave like every fabric under the sun, and I just find it easier to make it in the fabric I want and then pin it to fit after wards.

Bra answers are never easy. You can't just snag one and throw junk at it and ta-dah! Fabulous bra. I will say this is probably the hardest project in ATS/tribal costuming. Good luck.

When I buy really yummy fabric & want to test out the fit of a pattern first.. I at the same time buy less expensive fabric with the same properties of the good stuff (stretch, fiber content, etc.). That way I get a pretty good idea if I'm on the right track with the pattern. There will still be adjustments with the real deal, but you can get the learning curve out of the way on the practice fabric.. .. less cursing.. more fun!
