Ok, half of the worst part of doing a coin bra is over, I got the cups!! (huzzah) and did the covers, but I'm a bit confused as to how to make the coins overlap( fish scale style) I'm plus sized, and have lots of coins in varying sizes, (dime to quarter size) so does anyone out there have any good techniques??
Many thanks to *ALL* the crafty tribal chix out there for all the great advice!

    Hi Maria,

When I made mine I tried to keep the coins all close to the same size because you get a more uniform look when you are placing them like fish scales. You want to keep the rows spaced as uniformly as possible. They should look like the little diagram below but the two on the top should be slightly overlapping the one on the bottom. (Unfortunately, I can't make it look like that in the diagram but I hope you get the idea.) If you start this way you'll immediately begin to see how it works.

Once you have the first two coins sewn on then start to sew the first coin of your second row below that. Placing the coin slightly underneath and between the first two coins of your first row. Think of how roof shingles are placed - staggered but slightly overlapping. You will want to leave a bit of a gap between each coin in a row so that on the row below it you'll have a spot to place the loop of the coin and the ones above will overlap. It's a little tricky to explain. I'm a 40D and I guess if those coins were still used as currency, coin bra would be worth a Sultan's fortune, I know it feels like it weighs 20 lbs. So you better have super sturdy straps going around the back and your shoulders/neck.

    UGGGH!

I had the circles spaced so they made a triangle shape but when I hit submit it moved the bottom one to the left. So ignore that. They need to be arrainged in a triangle shape.

    Sorry about that.

I also worked mine with same size coins just to make it easier. I worked mine differently as I started from the bottom and worked my way up. That way you can see exactly where they will be sitting.

The advice I was given and found valuable is to sew through each coin 3 or 4 times. Those coins can ve very sharp and cut through the thread if you don't.

    Good luck with it.

To get spacing done easiest (for me at least and I seem to havce bvecome the bra guru of my troupe) buy some of the black cotton shoestring/cord-type stuff in the crafts/fabric section of any store (Wally World is my favorite for this stuff). String the coins on the cord and stitch the end of the cord in place. Once this is done, get the first coin in line where you want it and put a stitch on each side of it, then adjust the next one and so on. Coins don't cut through that stuff, there are less stitches messing up the inside of the cup, and you have them organized. Does that sound too confusing?

I use the method of stringing the coins on a cord and then sewing the cord to the bra. It works beautifully. I used a gold colored cord I got off a X-mas package for the last one I did.

That ingenious cord idea has a diagram in the photos section of the tribe, doesn't it? that really makes the idea make sense, and I'm definitely using it when my fabulous coins arrive in the mail :)

I totally agree! I've been making costumes (Cabaret) for 9 years and made a coin bra but they were the little ones with a hole and this method couldn't work with those. I also just ordered some coins and stuff and will try using that method. I'm sure it makes the coins really easy to line up.
