In my profile are three pics of my newest project. . .

My hair is too short for falls (nothing to attach them too) but I LOVE the look of colinette dread falls. . . so I sorta made a wig.

Would LOVE feed back and other suggestions on this!!!

It took three skeins of Colinette Point 5 yarn (Sahara is the color), one cheapy one dollar cotton tube head band and one cheapy stretchy crochted snood. Stays on pretty well (gonna add a wig clip or two JUST to be on the safe side. In the pics I have a scarf covering the headband (which is how I would wear it, I think. . . )

I LOOOOVE it!!! Let us know how it looks and performs in action. Did you attach the yarn to the snood which is attached to the headband?

I want to make something like that myself, but I can't find collinette 5 point in my area. I want to touch and feel it before I buy so I don't really want to get it online if I can help it. I'm looking around for collinette-style yarns I can use instead.

Mine also came from ebay - juliepoolies is the vendor. Its far far softer than I expected, feels more like soft cotton balls than wool too me. In another thread someone linked a vendor that sells a colinette type yarn thats less varigated (and FAR cheaper) that I will try next.

As for construction, yes thats what I did. I put the headband on the fake head, wrong side out. Laid the snood on that and had the edge start at about the middle of the head band and stitched it down. Then, I noticed too much "poof" of the snood so I took a few rows of it and squished them onto the headband and stitched those down too. . . this allowed it to fit in a bit closer to my head.

Then I just took my colinette and cut it in equal lengths and tied the center of each piece to the snood, working my way around. I tied it down to every other line of the snood (the ones that ran vertically from the headband, not those that run parallel). I tried doing it at every line, but it was TOO much and too freaking heavy.

I still am going to take a few more bits of yarn and maybe stitch under the headband itself along the top, as it stretches over my head you can see a bit of the netting (wouldnt matter under a scarf, at night or on stage), but thought it would be nice to finish it off :-)

I'm risking sounding like a complete idiot, but what the heck is a snood? I have short hair as well (between collar and ear-length), and I have all these falls and I think they'd look silly if I put them on with short hair.....Your idea is fabulous, just had to tell you!

I'm also glad there's another tribal dancer out there with short hair! :)

    Have a great day

      Thanks :-)

And a snood is a hairnet. Not the kind you wear to work at a restaurant but the thicker type that was very popular in the Victorian Era.

      To illustrate:

      www.snoods.com/snood.html

The one I got came from a store that sells supplies for hair braiding and weaving and they have a whole bin of elasticy snoods for a buck or two. I chose a dark one to blend in with my hair color and hoping that its less noticible, but the style is similar to the cream on on this above page (and stertchy rather than jstu cotton, but maybe cotton would be better. . . hmmmm).

Most are fairly large though, so like I mentioned, I found myself stitching the excess to the head band since I dont have gobs of hair to fill the inside and I didnt want it drooping.

Frickin' GORGEOUS! Basina, you have inspired me! I have that crappy in-between length that sticks out underneath wigs and isn't long enough to look good on its own, so I need to do something like this too but wasn't sure how. Thanks! You really did a lovely job.

Thanks everyone and I've got to add that this went FAST. The whole thing was prolly done in under two hours!

Cant wait to try a second one :-)

That's a really great idea. I never would have thought to use a snood. (Heh heh -that's a funny word.) It makes perfect sense though. Nice and quick - so quick in fact, that I hope you told all the dancers that you sweat over a hot sewing table for weeks just to get it done.

I want to do some kind of hair embellishments, but I'm not sure how. My way of doing my hair is as follows - on a good day I brush it. I don't have much experience with hair. I have kinda wild hair anyway, but it too is at that weird adolescent length. I don't want to go TOO over the top for Pennsic, but I want something. I don't want it to be too Crayola either - keep it naturalesque. Maybe just a few braids here and there, with stuff hanging off them. Would I just attach the embellishments directly to a hair tie and do the bun thing, or is ther another way to construct it? I suppose I could make several barrets with stuff hanging on them too.

Also - where can you get the Colinette, and what is the average cost?

Average cost for the colinette is $15 a skein (my wig took three) plus shipping from ebay. I think most other US online vendors sell it for around $22. Yeah, thats painfull.

This vendor handpaintedyarn.com/index.php sells what LOOKS like colinette, though I havent bought it yet, so I dont know if its really as thick and fluffy. Was kinda hoping someone here had purchased it and could compare them for the rest of us ;-)

This vendor also has alot of less crayola colors. hehehe

Another thing I do is tie braids around a crocheted head band (just the bottom row) and wear it under central asian pill box type hats. . . the headband can even be stitched into the hat for extra security. And also, a handful of braids hanging from an elastic headband under a turban or veil is nice as well :-) (someone else will have to answer your question about buns and regular falls as I havent had the hair length to try any of that. . . )
