Hello have such a big problem with my belt staying up. I have some gorgeous tribal beaded belts from Shimmy Bliss, and by the time I added cowrey tassels and to enlarge the belt, it was heavy! I would teach in these belts in my b.d. class and they would all fall off! I have tried kitchen liners, safety pinning etc., and it would actually drag my pants down and off!
I finally went to the Dollar Tree and bought some 1.00 knitted scarves and sewed them into my belts, and they actually stayed up after I tie the scarf on and tie the tribal belt on. I laid in bed and decided I needed to add yarn tassels and maybe a few cowrey shells to the scarves since u can see the scarves and decorate them, making the whole costume uniform and all.

Re: How to make your belt stay up!
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 1:31 PMI have non-stretch velvet for the backing on my two piece yarn belt that has quite a bit of coins on it. The velvet keeps it from moving in any direction. It's like velcro. :-) I also had an issue with my pants slipping of with this belt and I found that the ties were stretching so I used yarn to tie the panels togehter. It slipped only so far and then it just stayed put. I hope that helps!

Re: How to make your belt stay up!
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 3:10 PMif you are wearing the belt over silky pants or whatever, try laying down a couple zig zags of hot glue on the back of the belt, when it dries it will grab on to fabric and skin like a bra strap does, then if you need ot you can just peel it off later. -

Re: How to make your belt stay up!
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 6:25 PMI imagine the non stretch velvet still would slide, because I've used like "gripping" material to open jars, then the shelve rubbery backing, but thanks for the suggestion. When you don't have a butt, it is so hard for anything to stay on, even my coin scarves, finally falls off, the scarves that are triangular and made out of velvet too. Thanks for your suggestions.

Wed, October 24, 2007 - 7:27 PMSuspenders? lol
only thing left I can think of (since you've tried the safety pins I was going to suggest) is tying the belt at your waist, and letting it slip down from there... theoreticaly it should get stuck around the hips somewhere ;) (assuming the belt is adjustable enough for this...)

Re: How to make your belt stay up!
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 11:48 AMOn the DVD "I love Turkish Bellydance," Sarah Skinner shows how to add an elastic strip to the inside of costume pieces to make them fit snugly. I can't really describe this technique myself, but I do know that Sarah is on Tribe and posts every so often on the DIY costuming tribe. you might want to ask this question over there. -

Re: How to make your belt stay up!
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 12:12 PMhey I know! eat lots of cake and ice cream... expanding the size of one's bum is bound to keep the belt from slipping below.
then of course, you'll have the problem i have... belt slips up instead. -
