I was leaving practice last night with my dance bag in hand, and a porcupine quill poked me in my knee. Hello puncture wound! It hurts like hell. It maybe stuck in my knee less than a 1/4 inch, but it felt like it went all the way in! I am totally limping today! I am hoping I will be fine and able to do levels for my performance tomorrow! Care toy share your interesting bellydacing injuries?

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 9:28 AMI shchwacked myself in the head with my sword... come on.. who hasn't
Although my roommate trying to help me totally stabbed herself on the end of it.... I dont' think I'd heard of anyone actually drawing blood with one before. mostly blunt force trama...

Re: Dangerous accesories
Yesterday, 9:42 PMMy sword drew blood from my teacher's nose - she was trying to drop it from her head to her chest.

Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 9:32 AMWasn't an injury to myself, but in a veil class once I got whipped across the face by someone's pailette-edged veil. Two long scratches down my cheek.

Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 9:34 AMSounds like a bad deal.
Glad it was your knee and not your eye or face. I think I'd get rid of quills to be on the safe side.
Be careful of puncture wounds. Putting antibiotic cream on top often doesn't do the trick because germs have been pushed in well below the skin line.
Watch to see if the area around the puncture gets red or feverish. Or if you get a fever. If either happens, get to a doctor.
Inspect the quill that was the culprit to make sure that part of it didn't break off and imbed in the wound.
Hope you heal fast!!!

Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 11:02 AMDoes stabbing yourself multiple times (finger tips and gum (pulling a onery needle through some stiff material with teeth) with a sewing needle while sewing bellydance related stuff count? -

Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 11:15 AMOUCH!!! Girl, you need some needle nose pliers!!! -
-
Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 11:17 AMWatch out for twirlling canes too.. They smart when they snack you... -
-
Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 11:35 AMI got spanked by a classmates cane this week. It flew out of her hand and into my rear. Got a bruise somehow. It was one of the lesser injuries I've gotten by way of cane, but the funniest. Hitting yourself in the head is always brilliant.

Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 11:33 AMLOL! I have several pair for my wire work stuff but to lazy to go and dig them up, quicker pulling with teeth. I did go and get a pair after stabbing myself in the gum. -
-
Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 11:50 AMDon't pull with your teeth!! They'll thank you later.
I used to do it ALL the time and I broke my tooth about a year ago doing that. I now have a nice little battle scar chip in my front right tooth from the dern needle.
I still forget to get out the pliers though and usually end up pulling or pushing with whatever is handy. -

Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 12:25 PMHA! I have one too, I actually heard it referred to as a 'tailor's notch' once. Big chip in my bottom incisor, from needles.
We had a fusion number where we wore masks made out of lace, and one girl scratched her cornea. THAT idea was abandoned quickly.
-
-
Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 3:45 PMI had a frined that ripped her cornea just trying on a mask!
Who knew? I bet Dr.'s in New Orleans see this kind of injury all the time!
**Note to self: DO NOT wear Masks** -

Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 12:29 PMThis is actually my teachers story but I thought it funny enough to share.
While dancing at a middle school's cultural appreciation day, one of her zils went flying across the room and hit the principal in the head -

Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 4:49 PMHit myself in the face with my own hands multiple times.....I don't have my nostril piercing anymore because of this. ;-p However, I don't hit my septum piercing at all. Hmmm... Good thing though!

Re: Dangerous accesories
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 11:36 PMI've poked myself with needles and pins, burned with hot-glue, stepped on a pin, sliced open my finger while carving papier-maché (pre-bellydance costuming)....during dancing I learned the hard way to put heavy tassels at the BACK of my head. :P Still manage to smack myself in the face with them from time to time. I also regularly whip my troupemates with my braid (accidentally, of course) in rehearsal.

Re: Dangerous accesories
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 6:17 AMI sewed my finger with the sewing machine, the needle broke off inside my finger. It did not hurt at all. I realized the needle was broken, followed the thread and == AWK!!! The needle went right through the middle of my fingernail, and the threaded tip was poking out through the pad of my finger!! Had to go to the hospital to have it pulled out. -
-
Re: Dangerous accesories
Yesterday, 9:01 AMthe exact same thing happened to me when i was 15.... i yanked out my hand, and the needle was coming out on either side. mum very very calmly poured isopropryl all over it, then yanked it out wiht some pliers. then, in true maternal fashion, freaked out. i thought it was cool when the nail grew off, it had a hole in it! -
-
Re: Dangerous accesories
Today, 5:33 AMYeah, mine did too. It looked like a bull's eye with a hole inside a black circle inside a white circle, and the skin was not attached to the nail on the white or black parts.
We tried the plier thing but there wasn't enough of the tip to grab hold of, and X rays showed it was right next to the bone, so they gave me a dose of super-antibiotics to prevent a bone infection. -

Re: Dangerous accesories
Today, 11:25 AMI stepped on a sewing needle when I was a little girl...I was shrieking, but my great-aunt just sat me down and pulled it out, very quickly...I was a bit amazed, I'd have to say...
Thing is, my daughter did the exact same thing when she was tiny...and my having done so came right back to me...so I did just what my great-aunt did...and I saw the same look on little Brandi's face that must have been on mine, when it happened to me...just sheer amazement and relief...

Re: Dangerous accesories
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 7:30 AMI was thinking about using weapons in my dance in the future...but after readying all of this I may have to stick with my second choice...dancing with cotton balls and stuffed toys.....LOL! -

Re: Dangerous accesories
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 4:09 PMWell, this isn't a personal incident but one of my troupe mates stepped on her scissors shortly before a performance once. Both of the blades went into the back of her heel and just missed her tendons. She's doing fine now, but she had to stay off her feet for awhile....
Most of my injuries have all been blood donations courtesy of sewing needles of all types! ^_^
Meeow, I hope your knee had healed for your performance! How did it go? -
-
Re: Dangerous accesories
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 2:40 PMWhew, luckily it was fine. I just couldn't stretch it too much. If I bent my knee fully it was really sore. Not too many levels happened for me! It seems fine now, just a bit sore.

Re: Dangerous accesories
Yesterday, 10:25 AMGuys, have you considered joining this tribe:
tribes.tribe.net/bellyspaz
Not that I'm *implying* anything, just sayin'... :)
Besides, I am Queen Goddess of all that is Spazzy. That is why, in my extremely limited dance experience (okay, one bad performance at a tiny Hafla), I keep the ornamentation to a minimum. I'm bound to smash, pummel, impale, break, slice something or somebody (usually myself), if I have lotsa pretty things hanging from me.
Zoe was laughing about it, so I don't think she'll mind if I tell this story about dangerous accessories: while performing in N.C., a bracelet flew off just as she was spinning. Distracted by the flying bracelet, she just almost fell on her ass.
Even great dancers are not immune... -

Re: Dangerous accesories
Yesterday, 11:44 AMThanks for the link! I just smashed my finger in a drawer at work. Totally accident prone.

Re: Dangerous accesories
Yesterday, 12:52 PMOh, goodness...where in NC was she performing? I just saw Belly Dance Superstars here in Raleigh last year...was wondering if it was that show...altho, I didn't see any flying jewelry...I don't know if I would have noticed, anyhow...I was too awestruck by seeing them for the first time. -

Re: Dangerous accesories
