Showing some leg and modesty

So this may be a better question for the cabaret ladies, but I thought I'd try here since tribal costuming has been known to show a little leg as of late.

What do you do when you want to take your side slits really high up the thigh but still maintain some modesty?
Do you layer your skirts?
Do you put an overskirt on to obscure the slit?
Do you wear boyshorts underneith?

I was thinking that Rosehips would be a great way to mitigate the issue, or full coverage underwear. Or even making a stretchy miniskirt to wear under the long skirts.

I'm mostly concerned with what happens when you decide to spin to show off those lovely slit skirts and--oops, someone gets an eyeful of your underoos.

Harem pants. If you still want to actually show skin wear a pair that has open sides. These are usually connected about mid thigh to the waist. Garter pants with hot pants are another option.

I have a friend who wanted to wear this awseome "cut up to there" black and gold cab costume. Her teacher convinced her to make a pair of gold lame boy shorts to go underneath and it looked super cute.

A matching tight straight mini skirt that stays down when you twirl would work. Some people sew matching full coverage underwear or boy shorts into the skirt. Another solution I saw was adding a decoration along the top of the slit to keep it closed. You could have a series down the side so that there are spaces that are open (showing some skin) and then a clasp/trim/decoative button/short length of chain or rhinestone trip/etc. (the fabric can be tacked together under decorations that don't actually fasten).

Also, you could sew some flesh colored power mesh into the slit so it stays mostly closed but looks like you're showing leg. Or sew some chiffon panels into the sides for a sheer but not exposed look.

You can also wear bikini bottoms. They would probably stay in place better than underwear.

So, Tish, what does Sandra wear under her split skirts, if you don't mind giving away secrets? :)

Hi Zina! Not at all. :) I remember Sandra and I talking about this one time, and she said she just wears regular underwear. I was kinda' surprised, too, because I, myself, wouldn't feel comfortable wearing just undies. Sandra was the one who said you could also wear bikini bottoms. Oh, and I forgot, L. Rose Designs makes a panty just for dancing. I bought a pair one time, but the only thing I didn't like was that it tended to not stay in place, if ya know what I mean! LOL I was always "pulling out the sides" 'cuz they wanted to "ride up." hehe I think what I will do next time is either wear a bikini bottom (I'd probably wear a "boy-short" type bottom), or maybe the undies you can buy to wear under running shorts. You can get 'em at any athletic store. I actually had one teacher (whose name I'll refrain from mentioning! LOL) who said she was "notorious for wearing thongs." Those were exact words! I couldn't believe it. I would NEVER wear a thong under a costume. Gross!!!! LOL

Well I do have a really cool skirt that's long in the back and very high in the front, so I wear leggings with it. The ones I have are black with silver glitter in them, so that way instead of seeing my legs, it's shiny and pretty sparkles everywhere! :-) I'm tribal sooooo you may not want to go that route but I've heard and seen lots of harem pants and circle skirts being worn like these ladies are suggesting!

I just remembered that I ordered some panties from L. Rose Designs that are made just for dancing. They're called Performance Briefs, and you can get them here: www.lrosedesigns.com/catalog...efs.html

I will say, however, that I ordered a pair a long time ago, and the only problem I had was that they did not stay in place. I was always "pulling them out," if ya know what I mean! LOL I think I may have had mine made in the regular stretch fabric, so maybe if you used the "fancy stretch" fabric instead, they would stay in place better. The last thing you need when you're dancing is to keep pulling out a "wedgie"! LMAO

I think from now on, though, I will probably wear a bikini bottom, or panties that go under running shorts. I haven't tried these yet, but it's worth a shot.

Tish, have you tried the old pageant trick of giving your butt a quick dose of hairspray to keep the panties in place? I've used double-sided sticky tape (the prop of Hollywood starlets) to hold things in place as well.

Hi! :) No, I sure haven't tried that. What a creative idea, though! hehe I kinda' figure that bathing suit bottoms would probably stay in place the best because the fabric is so stretchy, but I haven't given it a shot. So far when I've performed, my skirts were long and didn't have long slits in them, so I didn't have to worry about my undies showing. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

These are awesome suggestions, thanks everyone!

I think what I might do is get a piece of stretchy crushed velvet and make a no-elastic miniskirt out of it. Minimal sewing. Recycling remnants. Its all good.

There is a dancer/seamstress on tribe (and on etsy) that makes custom flare garter pants out of velvet (or maybe crushed velvet that I think are really quite fetching. They are way more modest than the flare + boy shorts that have been making an appearance lately.
