Coin Bra Woes

So, my coin bra has gotten a little stinky. General sweatiness, plus someone borrowed it and kept it in a zip-lock bag after she wore it. You can imagine. Anyway, has anyone ever tried Febreze on a coin bra, or other costuming elements?

I've never tried Febreze, it might work. Here is a post from a while back about the same thing with lots of helpful advise:

Watch who you loan your costumes to. Not everyone appreciates what goes into making them or how much they cost. I've discovered this the hard way.

Frebreze is WONDERFUL! It's taken care of many of my costumes.

I also sew a liner (soft fabric please!) in each cup. When I get ready, I pull out the liner (after it's all nasty) and replace with a new one.

This thread is great. I'm just too busy to make my own concoction right now.

It's a Flying Skirts base with tons of coins, mirrors and goddess pendants on it. I don't think it will be leant out again, but I want to be sure not to damage it! :-)

I dont care for febreeze BUT what I do is fill a spray bottle with distilled water and some nice smelling essential oils... like patchouli or sage or even clove (which is great for getting rid of cooking smells if you burn the incense in the kitchen).... I spray liberally on front and back and then hang it up to air dry and pretty much always leave it hanging somewhere outside of a closet... I also spray my costume closet regularly so that it doesnt stink since I cant wash any of it.

Burning a stick of Nag Champa in the closet works well, too. I do this occasionally. Just be careful of the fire hazard.

to that spray bottle of water & essential oils, I would add 1/2 cheap VODKA... I got this costume freshening tip from a wardrobe person for one of the major ballet companies... .. so a spritz-down (but not soaking wet) and a good airing should help your coinbra smell more like "yours" again..

I concur on the vodka.... the higher the proof the more pure ethanol... but definitely if you do that make sure you dont use much AND it is absolutely dry when you where it again... ethanol being flammable and all....

on second thought you may wanna scratch the vodka.... this is why:

I research alcohol and we use pure ethanol (200 proof) in my lab.. I just remembered that it takes the color out of everything if you spill it.. the floor has white spots on it and I have had spots on my clothes so maybe you should test the fabric first before you use the vodka...

Maybe I should clarify.... the vodka/water mixture should be sprayed only on the INSIDE of a costume..... by all means test on a scrap piece of fabric or a small inside spot first.... a misting, not a soaking of the costume is the goal...

Here's the link to where I originally got the tip... reconstructedclothing.tribe.net/th...587

The Bolshoi Ballet has beautiful costumes.. can't imagine they would do anything to harm them.. but yes... ALWAYS test a cleaning method before using it on the real deal... thanks for the clarifying thoughts, Rachel :)

Yes, and the alcohol will also kill the stinky bacteria so they won't reactivate next time you wear it. Probably why it works so well.

Hey Elliah ... have you ever tried a product call "Norwex"? I don't know if it's available in the US, but some of the ladies here swear by it (especially the ones with teenagers in hockey).

lavender, rosemary and oregano all have antiseptic properties. I found one recipie for air freshener that recommended 20 drops of lavender per 1 cup of water, you could prolly do a combination of any of the 3 and get lovely smelling results.

Is it possible to wipe down the insides with a wet cloth and detergent? And then maybe a little frebreze and a outside air dry to boot?

I don't any kind of fancy bra, so I don't know if this would be a good option for what your working with or not. Is there anything on the bra that doesn't let you get it too wet to clean it? Like silks etc?
