Question about Melos and melo type pants

topic posted Tue, May 20, 2008 - 12:39 AM by  offlineDevon
Hey all, I'm working on my first pair of faux melo type pants. I'm a college student...can't afford the real thing. Anyway, I imagine I would have the same or similar problem if I had the real thing.

I seem to keep stepping on the pant hem. I'm planning on hemming them a bit to try to bring in the flare a bit. But I imagine that, unless I sew them shut to near the ankle I will probably always step on them. It seems like it would be annoying and potentially hazardous. Is this true? The last thing I want is to step on them and either trip or pull them down to show off my butt.

What are your experiences? Thanks all.

speaking as both a klutz and some one who made a pair of flairs that pool at my feet....

My first adjustment to my pattern was to make the inside hem just a smidge shorter. So the longest point of the flair was on the outside of my leg. From there I had to make a few adjustments to how I did a few moves to accomidate a little foot flourish to kick the flair out of the way. I also had to make some adjustments on climbing and descending stairs.

As a Melo lover, I can say this...

As far as dancing, I have one pair of Melos that are significantly longer than the rest, and I HAVE slid on them before, but not enough to notice in performance.

As far as wearing them everyday, I was walking through my living room holding my baby boy one day, and the flare got caught on the stick on the side of the recliner, pulled my feet out from under me, and I fell, pretty big, with my baby in my arms. It was very scary.

Flare pants should come with a disclaimer: Do not walk around objects that could potentially snag your flare while carrying your newborn.

For me the trick is to curve the flare upwards at the outside points, so that when hanging straight the points of the flare are no longer than the inside-leg hem. I still step on my hems occasionally, but usually only when going up stairs. Have never had any Melo-related accidents.

My troupe mates and I were just talking about this in Ashar. We've determined that there is a "melo kick" that dancers start doing in their dance to get their long melos out of the way of their feet. It *looks* like a folky dance kick, but it's really to get those melos out the way.

Ha! I was SO doing that kick at my last performance, when I was wearing 33" inseam Melos on my 28" inseam legs! *cackle* I think you've just given birth to a new dance move: the Melo Kick!

To the original poster: it really depends on inseam length. My 31" inseam Melos (and my Earth Mother Creations fauxlodias which were custom made at a 29" inseam) are great - I don't trip/step on them and the drag is minimal. My 33" inseam Melos are a whole other matter - I have to walk and dance carefully in those babies!

And one commenter was also right, if you hold out the flare on a pair of Melos, the flare curves up, and I'll bet that has something to do with minimizing stepping on/tripping over, as well as looking nice.

Yes the melo kick works wonders. :-) There is a hazard wearing ANY pant that comes near your feet and Melodias aren't any different. I don't step on mine much, but when I do its not something drastic. I think the more you get used to wearing them, the more you can avoid certain movements that you do with your legs that you don't normally think you do. ;-p I can say that they may trip you sometimes, but you get used to dancing in them after a while.

As always you should practice your movements and dances with your costume on. Practicing in Melos (and similar styles) helps you get used to their movements and your own IN the pants.

    Good luck!
