Goth meets Mardi Gras costume help

topic posted Thu, April 24, 2008 - 10:29 AM by  Geela
Hi everyone, I've been invited to perform at a Goth meets Mardi Gras ball and I'm so completely at a loss on what to do for costuming. I, myself, am not much of a goth girl so am really struggling. Any help, ideas, suggestions you could give me would be super duper. Oh ya, the show is in a week and a half (ugh).

Mardi Gras is known for it's detailed decorative masks, so go with a beautiful feathered one in black. Or one done with leather would be incredible! Maybe some details in traditional Mardi Gras colors (purple, green, & gold)? Feather boas are greatly Mardi Gras --- find one in black! And don't forget your beads --- for what is Mardi Gras without a few strands draped around your neck?

Oooooh!! Or a dark costume with a feathered face mask and then, rather than using panels or colinette yarn to dangle off the belt, why not use colorful strands of Mardi Gras beads to dangle down from it, with perhaps a length of feather boa on each side of the back? [I have no idea if this description makes sense to anyone else. I feel like I've just had a total Vision of the costume-to-be though! What a fun theme!]

This is no means the be all and end all list, this is a general "this will be broadly recognisable as goth" list, people regularly think outside the box, but in general...

The "standard" goth colours are: black, red, purple and white, and sometimes khaki, camouflage, dark green or darker blues. "Cyber goths" also add neon colours to that. Silver is usually the metallic colour of choice, gun metal or steel, gold is very rare, you get some brass or copper.

"Black and..." is a good way to go, Black and Red accents, Black and Silver, Black and Purple are all very recognisable goth colour themes in outfits.

Design influences tend to historical (particularly medieval, victorian and some 50s), vaguely industrial looks, horror themed looks (although this is VERY easy to do badly - believe me, I've done it).

Fabrics tend to match styles, i.e. Victorian/medieval will have brocade, velvet, lace, satins; industrial looks tend towards utility fabrics & army surplus; cyber styles tend towards futuristic and hi-tec fabric.

I'd also personally advise against the swirly black curlycues around the eyes, simply because they are hard to get even, photograph badly, and look terrible from a distance.
