halter/ triangle top

Hey ladies!
I'm really interested in sewing a halter top much like these:

I'm going to a rave in July, and I'll be dancing all night and jumping around. I wanted to do something bellydance inspired though. So I figure a halter will look good, keep me cool, and strap "the girls" down in place.

Sooo....any one know of any patterns or actual tops I can purchase?
Or if anyone has drafted a pattern and is willing to share I'll pay for shipping....

I just want a halter top base in BLACK that I can cover in glow-in-the-dark/black light reactive stuff.....

Scroll down to the comments, the fifth one down she explains step by step how she created the halter bra in the picture.
Haven't tried it myself, but the results in the pic look perfectly fitted from a seamstresses standpoint.

      Ha ha, go me.

This top took a LOT of work. Buy yourself extra fabric, and go into the project knowing that you WILL screw up two or three times, at least. But it's worth it! I now have a stock pattern that I can use to whip these bad boys out.

Speaking of triangle swimsuit tops and all... did anyone see the swimsuit catalog for Victoria's Secret in May? There is a top that looks JUST like a tribal bra ~ seriously gorgeous! $96.00. I don't have the catalog at home or I'd include the item number. It's stunning. Just wouldn't offer enough support of a gal like me, but it's completely decorated and those that read the last post on this topic know I'm not a huge fan of swimsuit tops as bras... this would be the exception to that rule.

thanks for all the replies ladies! And thanks for the link to the tutorial!

My main concern about a swimsuit top is that it will be too stretchy. I'm going to be at a rave probably jumping around quite a bit and I don't want a boob to come flyin' out. So will a covered swim suit top be strong enough to support the weight of beads and shells and such and maintain enough support to keep the girls in while jumping up and down???

Look for a padded top, and if you can't find one you can buy swimsuit cup pads at JoAnn's or another fabric store. Make sure you buy the top big enough to acommodate any padding you might add! Also, if certain parts cause you concern, you could stitch a length of grosgrain ribbon along the inside of the cup to prevent that part from stretching. Just make sure you measure while wearing the top, so it's the appropriate size.

I've been working on a pattern for these triangle alter tops, and I've posted pictures in my profile of the pattern pieces and the various steps to putting it together. It is a very rough draft, and cut to my size (34A) but might be useful as a starting point for others.

Yes, Erika, by all means! I've always loved your DiY stuff... just let folks know that I'm in there somewhere. Lord knows I poked myself with pins enough times...

I always put someone's name with their info.
I would never ever do that
You know your name will be there

I didn't think you wouldn't, Erika. It just comes out.

And hey, if you find any improvements to my pattern, I'd LOVE to hear about it. It was such a struggle, you know? I'm not that great at just making stuff up. I'm glad you're working with it, because I'm hoping you find some spiffy things to do with it.

I have been working on a triangle halter pattern for women with larger busts...

The trick is to cross tie them in the back.

As for coverage... I am not one to want my boobs hanging out either... so coverage is a big deal...

Give me a week or so, and I will have some on my profile, and tribe, and website =)

Walmart is a great place to buy bathing suit seperates. I buy black halter style tops and add coins, shells, trim, etc. on them. I wear a D cup and they never fall out. Just get one that has good coverage. If you get the plus size ones they have more coverage and pads built in. They tie around the neck and back so you can adjust them to fit. And they are less expensive than anywhere else I've seen.

Target has some great ones, too, and their prices are competitive to walmart.

Walmart - home of the cheap and cheesy (TM) (sorry, had to do it.)
