I am looking for dance pants with ruffles like Tempest has been known to wear...I either want to know how to make them, or find someone that sells them....
Thanks ladies!

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 1:21 PMI don't know what kind she wears. If they are made of stretch knit, I'm clueless about how to make them, but if they are more like this: people.tribe.net/c0f7259e-...17d761e3e, then I'd be happy to explain how I made them. It's really easy. Very much like making pantaloons.

Re: Ruffles
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 4:42 PMIf you have the base dance-pants already, they're stoopid easy to make. If you don't have the pants yet, well, get a pattern and make 'em.
If you can't sew. Go buy them or learn to sew. (its' easy. Just like welding, but with needle and thread instead of wand and fluxcore.)
Find lace (or whatever trim you want to use) and buy yards and yards of it. You do the math according to how wide around the pant leg is, how much you want it ruffled (twice the pant leg will give you a slight ruffle, but 3x the width will be fuller!) and how many tiers. Or, just buy the whole trim roll and forget the math. Put on the pants. Ruffle the trim up by hand and have a friend pin it to your pants so it comes out even front to back and at the heights you want. Take off the pants. (don't have a friend? Measure up from the hem and pin the trim yourself. Remember to leave lots for ruffling!) Most of the ruffle will have fallen down between the pins. No fear. Sit down with thread and needle or sewing machine and re-ruffle it as you sew it in place.
There. Your old dance workhorses look like new fancy frilly thangs! -

Re: Ruffles
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:38 AMOk...I've been debating trying my hand at making a pair of these. I saw something similar at the Green Festival in Seattle and thought to myself, I can do this! And our instructions are a big help there too Heidi.
But I have a question for you. When doing, say 4 tiers, or basically anything more than one, where does each tier get attached to? The pants I saw at the GF were a bit of a capri style and had two small tiers. One was wider than the other and they both attached to the base of the pant at the same spot a bit below the knee. So, I am wondering, would I have multiple tiers of varying widths, and sew them all at the same spot so they sort of cascade down the rest of the leg? Or do I leave the basic pant leg intact and attached approx. the same width of trim at varying levels to the end of the pant?
Hope that makes sense. Thanks. -

Re: Ruffles
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:55 AMIf you're only doing 1 or 2 tiers, cropping the pant leg and attaching both at the same point might work, but it would get too bulky at the seam if you used more tiers than that. On mine, I left the pant leg intact and added the tiers at various points up the leg, allowing 1" or so overlap so you don't see a space between layers. Might not be a bad idea to cut the leg off below the attachment point on the bottom ruffle.
