I have some pendants from a while back and I want to sew them on a new costume. normally I dont bother cleaning them since I wear dark costumes so you can't see it that much but I am working on a white/dark red costume now so I am worried to leave dirty marks on the white from the silver. How can you clean it? any other products than polish especially for silver (like vinegar or something?)

Re: cleaning old silver
Sun, April 22, 2007 - 10:07 AMThere are lots of products on the market for cleaning silver. I think the best is just a polishing cloth embedded with rouge and a little elbow grease. However, if your piece isn't high in silver it may not polish up much. Baking soda works good for cleaning of the gunk.
With all that said, you may still get some markings especially if the silver content is low. I would suggest backing the piece with felt so that if it rubs on the fabric it won't leave a mark.

Mon, April 23, 2007 - 1:07 AMI did a silversmithing class some years ago and the silversmith said that the best way to clean silver (this is actual silver, not gillet?) is with a mild solution of warm water and washing up liquid. Use a soft cloth and a soft childrens toothbrush to clean the ticky little areas.

Mon, April 23, 2007 - 9:01 AMDo not use toothpaste. It's too abrasive...
I bought a jewellry cleaning cloth.. Works great! -

Re: cleaning old silver
Mon, April 23, 2007 - 9:08 AMI have a heavy pendant that I wear on an ivory colored costume. Once I cleaned the piece, I then hit the inside of the hook with a little clear coat enamel, so as wear and tear continues, the black stuff won't come back, and onto the costume. It has worked great so far.
