So I'm dancing in a cultural festival at my school and when i handed in my paper i decided it would be smart to ask the lady in charge "am i allowed to show my stomach?" and she was like "No....." and in my head i was like "b.s....the girls at school come to school everyday with their whole midriffs hanging out".....annnnyways. does anybody have any ideas as to how i can cover my stomach but still look awesome when i dance. i also need it so you can still see the fluid belly movements of the dance as well. Thanks :]

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 8:04 PMI TOTALLY feel your pain!! They wouldn't let me show my stomach either when I used to perform at school! I have some vids on youtube and I think it really takes away from the dance when you can't see the dancer's stomach. duh. Nevermind that the dance company at my school could get away with certain ronchy dance moves and wear spandex booty shorts.
In the end we all wore fitting black tank tops, but I think it'd be better to have a body stocking or something translucent.

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 8:21 PMhave you thought about adding some longish fringing to the bottom of you bra ,if its a favourite bra just hand stitch it so that you can remove it when your done?, or draping a nice veil across from one shoulder and tying it at the hip?
hope you find a solution hun.
but your the one dancing so feel comfrotable in what your in.
had a similar situation myself last weekend at a performance. my dance teacher wanted me to wear a choli that was miles too big and i didnt like, so i just didnt wear it and wore what i felt most comfortable in. she loved it. phew! lol! -
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 8:27 PMIf you look at my profile, I just posted some pics of my performance today. I have a sort of two panel thing that is part of my bra (bra covered up by choli). Maybe you could do something like that?

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 8:35 PMI hear ya on this one. I find it sad that cheerleaders and pom pom squad can incorporate "stripper" moves in their routine and their told it's "cute", but belly dancing gets a scorned look of disapproval because some people think that it's only for arousing men. I hope you can resolve this where you feel comfortable and not give up your freedom of expression. Let us know how it goes.

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 6:47 AMAsk a parent to get involved. Seriously. If your parents are fine with your dancing, then everyone else can be, too. And DEFINITELY bring up the point about cheerleaders and other dancers wearing short shorts. Be very professional, but firm, and if nothing comes of it, ask your parent to mention that they will be writing to all the local papers and news organizations to publicize the discrimination you are experiencing. Take a video of you dancing in with you so they can see what you are going to be doing. Stand up for yourself, girl! :):):) -
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 8:45 AMi definitely agree with this
if they allow cheerleaders to wear the kind of stuff that they wear, they should let you dance without covering your midriff
doesn't your school have a dance team? most dance teams don't cover their stomachs either -
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 2:56 PMActually, school dance teams are often required to wear a solid, flesh-colored, bodystocking. For the exact same reason.
At the risk of sounding like a pedantic bore, why do you need to show your stomach? I've danced for eight years with a covered stomach at a Renaissance Faire, and it hasn't hindered my performance in any way. As dumb as the midriff rule sounds, and as often as you've heard this, it's there for a reason. Sure, it's not fair or realistic that they bar bare bellies but don't have an issue with boy shorts. But whether we like it or not, it's still a rule and it's still worth following.
Rules aside, as stereotypical as it is for bellydancers to expose their stomachs, wouldn't it be rather nice and refreshing to cover your abs and burst that little stereotype to bits at your school? You have an opportunity to show an entire campus that bellydance isn't about showing off skin, but about grace, technique, and a dance rooted in the earthy moves of the Middle East. You can prove that our dance isn't concerned with being sexy, but instead is beautiful, powerful, and full of self-confidence and a sense of sisterhood. What a great opportunity, eh?
I'm sure that you're an accomplished enough dancer that you're performance would not be effected in any way by a covered stomach. I'm sure that you've been dancing long enough that the audience will be more focused how fluidly you move, and not on the fact that your stomach isn't showing. Stomachs aren't important - the dance is. -

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 3:32 PMI agree with Tamara on this and to me is it really that big of deal. Life isn't fair unfortunately but you can turn this into a positive and dance absolutely beautifully! I do not feel comfortable enough when I dance to show my belly but I love the dance so I don't think that hampers the dance in anyway. -
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 6:43 PMI've been asked to cover for school cultural festivals and also events at a local church... the answer? Wear a beautiful Gawazee coat! Always a flattering item on any dancer. :) -
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 6:51 PMThat's exactly what I used to wear at Faire. Atira's Fashions makes a beautiful pattern for one (there's a picture of me in it in my photo album somewhere), and Madame X makes one that's adjustable, for those of use who deal with weight fluctuations. Oracle is very correct - they are very flattering, and show movement very well. You can even add a large dangly kuchi piece over the stomach to really show off stomach rolls and flutters.
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Sat, March 22, 2008 - 7:13 AMI agree, it sucks to have to cover your belly, but Gawazee coats are flattering, sexy, and easy to make!
The first troupe I danced with covered their bellies, and I either wore a Gawazee, or tucked some really cool stripey fabric up into my bra and had it long enough to tuck down into my skirts...I think towards the end of my photos, there are some pics of me in that troupe....all covered up....Sigh...

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 7:04 PMTamara, I am with you on this one. Middle Eastern dance originated with folkloric costumes. Only when a dancer named Little Egypt was introduced as dancing "the dance of the belly" (for lack of better cultural translation and wording) at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, did the transition from folkloric costuming to the Hollywood image of cabaret costumes begin.
CeCe, The belly rolls and undulations that you do would be shown off well enough for your viewers by wearing the right color and texture of a tight body suit piece. . .
I have been a teacher for almost 20 years, and I have found that by giving even just a little more information than my audience had when they came to me is just as effective (or even more sometimes!) than giving them the whole package. Sometimes it's ok to enlighten people just a little bit. That may give them the inspiration to find more out on their own.
I don't feel that compromising is a bad thing. . .I want to put the message out there that we are dancers for spirit and for the love of dance, and not for the gratification of men, and any opportunity that I can do that, is great! I am rather conservative in my dance costuming, as I am not comfortable baring my midriff as a plus sized dancer, but I am not opposed to women baring their skin. Every dancer has her own comfort in mind, and the kids you are teaching are impressionable. . .they don't know the difference between sexual and sensual, and they certainly don't understand that bare skin is just bare skin. What they can learn from you is grace, being powerful, and expression. If you add bare skin, they may miss the nuances that are essential to our dance.
Have fun with your performance, however it turns out for you, and let us know how it goes!
Namaste

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:18 PMI don't know, ladies. The cheerleaders at my old highschool, cheer in tops that are half-tops. I think it all depends on the area. Over here, if there was a problem with a dancer not being able to show her belly, I'd point to those gals. Cause I frankly think their uniforms, are utterly tasteless, and would RATHER see a bellydancer :) :)

Fri, March 21, 2008 - 9:34 AMYour profile says you live in Washington. If you and your family feel like taking it to this level (which you shouldn't need to), here's the website and phone number of the Washington State chapter of the ACLU.

It really depends upon what you want to do. They have no right to discriminate against you this way. I always found it funny, at my high school the drill team and cheerleaders paraded around and danced quite provocatively in school endorsed clothing and activities...but the school dress code prohibited their attire. -

Fri, March 21, 2008 - 11:01 AMyeah!
gah when i was in high school sometimes i jsut felt really embarassed watching the cheer and dance routines
they seemed like tehy were ripped right out of a strip club
no joke
and then you'd see those girls coming to class with those shirts without a back at all, or with their stomachs out, or extremely low V-necks
but they're allowed to get away with it because alot of the male administrators think they have a chance with them =p haha
i dunno what it is
it's annoying

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 11:13 AMMy group has a regular gig for Chinese New Year's. They tend to be uncomfortable with a lot of skin, so we cover up a bit. (There was a ballroom dancer this year who bared her arms, legs up to her bottom, and sides - the dress had lacing where the side seams would be. Everyone was cringing.)
We've used thin rayon shawls with fringe and lengths of lacy fabric tied at the bottom of the choli. Another alternative is a close fitting tank top worn under the choli. I like this method as you can still kind of see what's going on and it gives a good opportunity for contrasting colours.
That is, if you decide to follow instructions ;-)

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 11:50 AMI would ask to arrange a meeting and say something along the lines of, "For Middle Eastern dance, a lot of the movement and beauty of the art form comes from the movements in the torso, especially the stomach. It is for that reason only I ask to bear my stomach for this dance. If you would like, I am willing to show you beforehand my costume and number, to show you what Middle Eastern dance truly is, and not the over-sexualized and hollywoodized dancing that the general public considers to be "bellydancing"." -

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 12:04 PMWhen I first started dancing and looking up belly dance on u tube I would show it to my sons, 7 and 3. The hubby got really upset. "You can't show that to the boys!" I told him he needed to get out of his "things women do are for males to be happy and horny" mind set. I had to educate him as well as my little ones.
I then told him that if I don't expose my boys to the female form and the beauty of the dance then they WILL grow up with the thought, "It's hidden away, for adults only" and it WILL get catagorized in their minds as "porn or stripping" and that is NOT how I want my boys to see women at all.
Yes, women can be attractive and comely, but that's just our outside selves. I want them to see and respect the intelligence, strength, poise & ladylike qualities that a whole woman has and let that be the ideal for them. If that kind of woman turns them on, then so be it, but it's not why we dance and not for whom we dance unless we choose to do so. -

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 4:00 PMAs my wise friend told me, Gigi, pick your battles....If it is really inportant toyou to show your tummy fight it...but be prepared to accept the consequences...that just my experience...I fought somthing and I just knew I was right...and I was asked not to perform...not saying that will happen toyou, but if they have rules, or whatever, for whatever reason...you should gracefully follow them...I have seen many amazing dancersperform without showing thier tummy...I like showingmy tummy too...but it's not that important to me...If you want tobe respected...you have to do respectable things...and if its the rule, then you gotta follow it...but if someone is just on a power trip...call em' on it...go above that person, get an adult involved...My daughter has danced at her school a few times, and it was NO tummy, but she still blew them away, at age 10....belly rolls, mayas and all...I made her a halter top, with a fishnet top under it, and then fringe hanging down...you cuold still see her movment, and that was the point...Good Luck!

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 3:49 PMAs a public school teacher, I have to chime in.
The woman in charge may be covering her rear end by making you cover your belly. If the school's policy is "no bare bellies" (and yes, I know that dress code is often the most overlooked rule) she may be making sure that after the show, she still has a job.
I had a group of middle school students dance in a talent show two years ago and MANY parents and teachers were in a tizzy because they were "belly dancing". All girls were required to wear a belly covering (I think all three of them wore black one-piece bathing suits under their cholis and skirts). Nothing was lost because of the covered bellies and many people in our community were educated that evening as to what Middle Eastern dance is *or* what it is NOT.
It is so very not fair that dance teams and cheerleaders get to dress and gyrate the way that they do - but I don't think that it requires calling the ACLU.
Go out there and do us proud! Best of luck in your performance! -

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 4:13 PMI remember all too well the discrimination and hypocrisy prevalent in todays school system; at least where I was. Sometimes I wish I hadn't been as beaten down by it and fellow students and would have spoken up for myself and others more than I did. But we cannot change the past, only learn from it and inform others.
I agree with you Julie; it is highly likely that said teacher is simply covering her rear and she has every right to do so. But this brings up the issue of the hypocrisy present in this institution. Should it be pointed out and the discrimination made known? Or should it just be swept under the rug?
It really depends upon what the people involved are willing to go through. I wholeheartedly agree that the bearing of the midriff is not required for belly dancing (nor any form of dance). But the decision (baring any equally enforced rules) should be up to the performer and (when a minor) the performers parent/guardian.
Either way you decide to perform, I am sure you will be wonderful. -
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 4:24 PMthe reason i'm so dead set on showing my stomach during the performance is because in my dances i show a lot of fluid belly movements involving different types of belly rolls. you would not be able to see this if i'm covered up. I really do find it insulting to women that the schools can let cheerleaders and other dancers do basically stripper moves on stage whilst wearing tight booty shorts and tight low cut tops and have that called "cute" but when somebody does something that is traditional, it is interpreted only by what people now days think that belly dancing is. if i cover up my midriff that will just mean that the close minded hypocrites have won and thats the last thing i want. I am pretty tired of this "you have to be covered up because the female stomach is something to be so ashamed of" mindset that most people have. -
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 4:53 PMIt is unfair. Life is often like that. So choose your battle. You may have to choose whether you want to have your way or get to dance.
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 5:07 PMOn a tangent of my own. It is sad state of affairs that women are shunned showing bare pregnant bellies unless they are a famous personality and it's an acceptable thing only because they are famous. We had a incident here where a woman was asked to get off a plane because she breast fed her baby and another passenger didn't like it. If you have ever breast fed you know your not flopping them out and exposing yourself. Most women are very discreet. Last I checked it's a woman's right to feed her child via da boobies!
I just think it's sad to have double standards for our girls in schools. If the cheer leaders have to cover up then so be it for all the girls (and boys) there, but if not, then a belly should not be an issue.
If young women stand up now for equal acceptance, perhaps their daughters won't have to deal with it in the future because they enlightened someone. -
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 6:33 PMCheerleaders, last I made costumes for them, are not allowed bare midriffs, either. It's school policy to have your stomach covered, but there are no rules about how short your shorts can be. If Cece were to perform in booty shorts, the school wouldn't have a thing to say, because there is no rule against it. However, since no one associated with the school or a school event is to have a bare tummy - boy or girl - it would not be considered good form to have your stomach showing, knowing full well the regulations associated with the school district. This isn't a question of double standard, in this particular instance. Boys aren't allowed to have their tummies showing, either - although the thought of midriff-baring boy's basketball players does make me giggle a bit. If this were a case of discrimination, then an outcry would be just. But as it is, there seems to me to be very little cause for complaint. One student is being treated just as fairly as every other student, and it seems rather unfair to think that one student should be allowed to bend the rules when so many before him or her have been unable to.
The rule is not an attack on women. it was placed there with much thought by the school board. Personally, school dress code does not bother me one bit. When I was in high school, the only people complaining about it were the ones who wanted to dress in the extreme opposite of the rules. The school boards do not throw rules around just because it's fun. They do it for the safety of the students. There's a reason students aren't allowed to have pagers, backwards baseball caps, bare midriffs, cleavage-baring tops, bare feet, and everything else included in the dress code. In my opinion, it's unfortunate that the schools had to create and enforce dress codes with teenagers because some parents didn't. And while I realize that this statement might open up another can of worms, it's what I believe. Students need to give themselves a reality check and remember that they're there to learn, and that while everyone has the right to express him- or herself, we all bear a certain amount of responsibility for it. In school especially, your appearance has a direct effect on those around you. And bare midriffs have been banned because it was thought that they were too distracting and left one open for sexual harassment complaints. And as laughable as their reasons might be, they felt justified in them. And really, a little modesty never hurt anybody.
Kay, sorry for the rant. Moving on.
Although I love to bare my stomach when I dance, I also respect the fact that there is an appropriate time and place for it. A school does not wish for stomachs to be shown, therefore it is no more appropriate to dance there in a halter or bra than it is to wear cutoffs and a tank top to a cocktail party. The more we dance, and the more venues we dance in, the more we come to understand this. Our dance is one for the entertainment of others, and when we risk making the audience uncomfortable, or worse, offending them, we adjust. Especially as a paid performer, it is much better to show a little less skin when called for than to never be invited back - or have word spread about us and bellydance as a whole. It's not a question of being ashamed of ourselves, because we as bellydancers get taught from Day 1 to love ourselves for who we are. But we can love ourselves just as much with a tummy cover as without.
There are plenty of ways to show off muscle control without having your stomach completely exposed. There have been a good number of suggestions in this thread as to what to do when you need to cover up a little skin.
As I stated before, I am all for taking what could be thought of as someone trampling all over your vision and turning it into an opportunity to show that bellydance is more than just a peep show. As bellydancers, we all have had our share of sideways glances, snide remarks, and ignorant questions involving 'what we really do'. This is a perfect opportunity to show that what we really do is Maya, Egyptian, and Turkish, with so much inner strength and sheer technical muscle control that onlookers gape and wish they could do what we can. No, seriously. We are effing awesome. As fluid as bellydancers are as a whole, people always look at us and wonder how the hell he do it. heck, most of the time, they can't even fathom what parts of us are moving and where. isn't it nice to know that each time we perform, we get an opportunity to wow someone and open their eyes to our community? Get out there, dance, cover up if need be, and show the audience what strong, graceful, empowered, women bellydancers are. -

Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 11:16 PMso along the lines of wearing something that DOES show your stomach movements...
a sheer-ish fabric with shimmer or sparkle can accentuate your movements even more than bare skin, it's true, it's true!
i think it's a great point that by showing how mesmerizing your dancing can be with out showing skin is a true show of skill...
Rachel Brice got on stage with sting and danced in jeans and a hat- her skill shined through. if you think you CAN NOT represent your self as a dancer with out showing your skin, you don't give your self enough credit. there will be other opertunities to show off your belly work, get out there and show them what an art form this dance can truly be! -
-
Re: oh my goodness i hate teachers......
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 5:27 PMI was thinking the shimmery or sparkly sheer fabric, too...it will catch the light and make the focus go to where you want it...maybe even extend the fabric to arm gauntlets, too...kind of on the same vein as wearing the upside down cut up tights in that way?
That said, when I was in school, the ones who had the dress code enforced on them were the ones who weren't in the 'in' crowd...I, being one of them...I was wearing some of the same things that the girls whose parents contributed money to the school were wearing, but I'm the one that got called on it...and the others were getting away with it...really ticked me off...but then again, I've always liked to push the envelope and stand up for who I am...
My daughter has been cheering for quite a few years and they're not allowed to wear cropped shirts, either...usually only see that in the college squads or private squads...
