so i have been saving up to order a pair of melodia's for about a while now. i've been daydreaming about dancing in a pair of sash pants and pinching my pennies.

last week, i was ready to order. i got on the website and went to add to cart... i was forwarded to a page stating that they didn't have the requested item in my size. i tried every single color in every single style in my size on the website. THEY DIDN'T HAVE A SINGLE ITEM IN MY SIZE! (M)

i was pissed! so i called their store! the lady tells me, "oh yeah we're out of a lot of the LARGER sizes in most of our styles right now but we're launching a new line at the end of the week!"

(LARGER SIZES?!!)

whatever.

anyway, i go back to the site this weekend to check out the "new line"... it's not posted.

as of today, guess what... IT'S STILL NOT POSTED.

i'm so not ordering from melodia designs.
Much less expensive than Geisha Moth's $120 to replace what I have, but is this a good deal, as well? Only $14 to have them shipped to island! Maybe I'm being too hasty to decide? I'd take a whack at making my own again, but with my sewing machine floating somewhere across the Pacific on its way to me, that option will be out for another two months or so. (I know, right? How am I going to survive?!) Any and all input would be greatly appreciated, ladies!

As of today, my very first 'Flying Skirts', backless ATS style choli arrived. The tag boasts that it can be worn without a bra.

And, I have to disagree. For myself at least.

I am a 36 DD -- and this choli can NOT be worn without a bra. No. Sorry. And so... this is a problem for me. This choli is very, very nice... I am very impressed with it's construction and the fabric is great. But, I cannot wear it without a bra, and I don't see how any larger chested dancer could, either.

Such a never ending battle.... *SIGH*

So now I'm wondering... what can I do to make this work? Anyone have any suggestions?? I put a picture up in the gallery of how it looks over my bra. And the thing is... I NEED that bra support, so, maybe someone here can help me out??

Help?? This all just seems all so .... unfair to me. I don't think I should have to wear a choli with a back just because I have a larger chest. There has to be a way to modify this -- even with this choli I just got. Seems like such a shame to me.

We have all seen the beautiful jewelry that tribal belly dancers wear. In this particular style of belly dance, the costumes are darker and the jewelry is more abstract. The dancers typically make their own costumes and at times the jewelry as well.

Tribal belly dance jewelry consists of metal and silver jewelry. Some can often be heavy especially if you like to fill your arm with bracelets and cuffs. The jewelry is often bought at festivals or haflas and yes, the most popular place to find them is on eBay. The bracelets, necklaces, and earrings all come from different parts of the Middle East and other places like Africa. Turkey, Afghanistan, and India all have an inspiration among tribal belly dancers. Purchasing jewelry of this caliber would have to be an investment, since it can get really expensive.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on tribal jewelry. In fact, I made a pair of tribal inspired earrings. To make a pair of your very own tribal inspired earrings, you need the following supplies:

1. a hot glue gun, tweezers,
2. earring posts (make sure you buy posts you aren’t allergic to, they can be irritating), and
3. two buttons that are flat in the back.

Some buttons even have the back part attached to sew onto clothes, if you really like a pair, you can cut off the back piece and then shave down the sharp edges. By the way, another way of saving is subscribing to Joann’s email list, that way you receive coupons via email, even cheaper! Make sure when your choosing a pair of buttons, they reflect your style and individually when you dance.
Material Needed to Make Your Own Earrings

Material Needed to Make Your Own Earrings

I bought a pair of wooden buttons, that were made in India. They have a large round shape and have a flower in the middle, they definitely had the tribal look. I also bought a pack of earring posts, so I can make more than one pair. Along with my coupon, I spent less than $7.

Procedure:

1. First off, heat up your hot glue gun. Hot glue guns usually heat up pretty fast and be aware of where you place it to avoid burns.
2. Decide on where you want to place the earring posts on the button. I placed it on the middle near the edge of the button. Get your tweezers and grab the post.
3. Place hot glue on the post and by using the tweezers, place the post on the button. You just turned buttons into earrings!
So, I wear my bracelets, over wrist 'gloves' and sew fabric to the backs of necklaces, and now, even pendants. But when it comes to rings, I never know what to do. I have some really, really nice old tribal rings, and they can't be backed in fabric, or they won't fit.

So I was wondering, does anyone have any suggestions? Good ones that will actually work?? I mean, besides "ditch the rings" :)

FYI -- if this happens to you, I suggest you do what my doctor told me to do: wash the affected area ASAP. Do NOT scratch at it or rub it or you will risk causing an infection. And this page, is full of good info:

Does anyone have any hints on how to do this without having the front look huge and bulky? You know - similar to how the Indigo wears them. I've attempted to "tie" it without actually tying it with no real success. Since it's vintage, I'd rather get some advice before I destroy it trying to get this to work by overzealous trial and error, you know?

So, I was thinking of banishing my yarn and fabric to the garage, on the theory that I won't have much time for it soon anyway. However, I'm concerned about what would be the best way (if any) to store it in the garage (considering keeping the polyesters and cottons in the garage, and the good alpaca and wools in the house).

On the up-side, we live in Tuscon, so moisture is not a problem. However, bugs are. Do you think I could keep fabric fresh and bug-free if I vacuum-bag it, and then place it all in a plastic storage container? Or is there still too much of a risk for it weather and animals to damage it?

I need some advice on how to deal with the portion of the coat below the point where the front and side seams end, the 'tails' if you will. I don't want the edge of th knit to curl inwards. Would it be OK to add a woven lining and top stitch the bottom and both sides so the tails keep thier shape and lie flat? Does anyone have a coat made like this?

all moral dilemmas aside, i am trying to determine how best to sew in into costumes and "care for" it. for example, it is one large piece comprised of many smaller pieces sewn together, and some of the joins need to be re-sewn by me. also, i am not sure if i need to oil, or otherwise clean, the skin backing. i should not wash it, right?
also, can i dye something like this? it is a natural grey color now.

i am planning to sew some leggies, a belt of some kind, and even a furry dance bra.

-skirt tucked up at hips, left a bit longer in front and back
-I have a denim stretchy bustier-type shirt that I often tuck up for practice. It has straps and a little ruffle down the front. Thought maybe layering this over another shirt? But what?
-very short, body-hugging ruffle-bottomed pants, though I dunno how I'd make those, or whether they'd look weird with a skirt over top. Probably wear tights under those, as well, with the feet cut out.
-A tiny top hat. This I can make easily.

Right now my thoughts all seem to be going retro, but too far back-- my love of steampunk is making me want to Victorianize the whole thing! Ideas, suggestions? I'm soooo stuck. Feel like a total n00b- "What should I wear? Help, help!" ;P

Yes my lovely sisters of mindblowing, wombcauldron stirring, evolution, revolution, restitution, regenerative, insight catchment, mindful, authentic dance, movement, theatre, prayer, sisterhood web weavers and healers!!!!!!!!! - (whew you all are an awesome community) - Palika is transforming yet again, responding to Gaia's call and Heavy HIps Tribal Belly Dance as school community is officially closing her business doors (never her heart or inner circle though).

On the close of this full moon my garden is bursting with new life, regeneration of energy, elemental forces manifesting in a mandala outside my cave door and I let go, I release and come full into myself as I am now. I'm stepping into a larger body, mind, soul dance practice and prayer of green photosynthesis, of rich brown microbial web soil life, of myceliating fungal networking of repair and regeneration, of polycultural food forest fractal freedom, water witching winding, permaculture prisms and hope for humans as healers to the Gaia landscape instead of destroyers.

I stand whole and bow richer for this incredible gift of visioning, healing, growth, transformation, learning, sisterhood and community that has been a decade of wonder and enrichment as Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance - a gift from the Goddess, unsought but heeded when she beckoned. I have been humbled, stretched, pushed, pulled, challenged, excavated, oxygenated, heard, sung to, healed, blown out of my mindset and bodyset, joyed, buoyed, formed and reformed, found, lost, strung out, discovered, appreciated, scorned, blissed out, gifted, stunned, rooted, called, loved and loved some more, recognized, returned, rerooted, caressed, birthed and died, freed, and deeply blessed on this exploration/journey. I offer gratitude, I offer thanks, I bow to the Divine in all who have come to learn, come to heal, come to transform, and come to find their voice and service in the loving womb of Heavy Hips. The groundbreaking Heavy Hips website (on which many built) will remain up as a template and inspiration for women finding their way on the path of dance as prayer, healing, celebration and sisterhood.

While I have been working on the inner levels of release of Heavy Hips for over 3 years now - the physical release of the accoutrements grounds me in the elemental material plane of letting go. I have been a collector of functional art and beauty, both ethnic and handcrafted for over 3 decades. Much of which has been amassed as a Director of a Performance Troupe and Dance School and Bazaar is yearning for new hips to illuminate and empower, new hands to be caressed and protected by, new walls to shine their rich heritage out from.

Thus all is being auctioned and sold on Ebay - new treasures being posted daily. May you give gratitude and haven for these beauties but know that they are not who you are. Here is the link for my listings - you can also search by seller - Mayadevi108.
Here is the detailed blurb for the collection.
Its the end of an era! The acclaimed Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance Company and School and The Gypsy Closet Bazaar have had their final bloom. My exquisite costume and accessories inventory is up for new stewardship and cherishing. Hopefully by you! Heavy Hips and The Gypsy Closet set the standard for stunning quality vintage textiles and silver and touchable magnificent committment to natural materials such as silk, wool, satins and cotton. All items for sale are gently used unless stated as new and have been cared for by the meticulous hand of Palika. The prices here are set to be a good deal and have been an investment for me. Please respect that quality crafted goods are not available at KMART prices. If you are a vendor and want the entire inventory we can discuss a market discount.

So... Dive in. Relish the opulence of quality collectible vintage tribal mirror cholis of the Kutch and Banjara tribes, collectible ethnic silver and jewelry, silk Flying Skirts spinning skirts that drip with beauty, tribal textiles like saya gosha fringe and tassel hip wraps from Uzbekistan, Tajikastan and Turkmenistan, coin and metal riveted Afghan belts (which are really sleeves from their fabled ethnic dresses), vintage (not new) Banjara mirror belts, Banjara embroidered and embellished tribal skirts, Flying Skirts silk bloomers and cholis and yummie silk veils in jewel tones from LRose Designs, antique silk wedding veils from India, Turkoman and Uzbek coats and more. I'm also selling related media and props - a perfect trio of gourds and brass waterpots, thick stemmed glasses for dancing on, candle glasses and other bits.

In gratitude to Life, Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit, with a prayer to remain in service - I bow with folded hands.

Once upon a time, long long ago, I had a man to shop for, and at an SCA event, I found a vest just like this one (slightly different emobroidery design, but still) for which I bartered -
http://www.tribalbazaar.com/deluxe-embroidered-vest-gold.html

Having separated (I got custody of most of the SCA garb), moved, and had everything in storage, and stuffed in corners and wooled the cats around, which upset them and their catbox training, etc. .... this beautiful peice of textile art that only got worn once or twice, along with several of the shirts is now a cat-piss smelling mess. Looks fine, but stinks. The shirts, I have thrown in the washer with a healthy dose of vinegar, but what can I do with the vest?

I've considered laying it in the tub and running the shower on it to rinse it really good, then spraying the living crapola out of it with the vinegar to counteract the cat piss and ammonia, then laying it out to dry in the sun or something. I know that some of these peices are delicate, and have had some stuff that shredded and/or came apart when washed, and on hter stuff the embroidery shrank up, or the fabric behind the embroidery shrank up, so and and so on, etc. so Im scared to get it wet, and scared to futz with it too much, but I cant ask anyone to wear it as is. It's not "dirty" - you can't see anythign wrong with it, but the smell is powerful. Vinegar often kills a lot of this, but its just this paticular peice... it's just friggen COVERED in the bold braid embroidery and mirrors.

Does this sound like a workable solution? Any suggestions? Tweaks?

Now, I find myself inthe position of needing some basic costume items, and I don't know where to go -- I am finding all my Googling kinda' confusing, and finding me not much of anything. I need some help from you folks who are in the know to direct me to some resources/places/people who could supply this.

I need a very full, solid color XL brown skirt (or near solid color; subtle pattern or strip, or metallic stripe okay), and a green top and hip accent that match each other. I'm hoping for a little bit of matching scrap fabric for a hair kerchief, or to get some matching accessories like that.
I need them asap! I would make them myself, but I am in the process of moving, so all my tools and supplies are packed away.

Hi all, I hope someone knows what I'm talking about here...

I made a sample choli using the Folkwear Tribal Style Belly Dancer pattern. The instructions recommend a cotton fabric so that's what I used, using the size M.

It came together pretty well...BTW, I now LOVE gussets! Anyway, when installed on my bod, the top pulls at the shoulders (looks unattractive in the shoulder front area, and gaps in the back toward the band. I figured out the shoulder things kind of corrects itself if I loosen the shoulder ribbon...

But the back... what's the deal with the gapping? Did I use a size too small? I am an A cup so had to use the B size as there is no B but thought the small would be too small around.

This was my mock up, using an old sheet. I'd like to know how to get it right before using a pretty fabric. Is this why people use a stretch fabric? That scares me cause I still haven't figures out the trick to using it.

Oh yes, are the sleeves always kinda loose around the arms?

Thank you so much.

I might be able to make do with a 35 or 36 inch because you tend to dance barefoot ;) But does anyone have a recommendation for a solution to my problem?

I recently received my long awaited first pair of Melodias through the post from America. As I am very petite, I’ve struggled to find a pair of tribal trousers that aren’t ridiculously long on the length. I managed to find a pair through the Melodia ebay store with a 27inch inseam. Whilst I love these trousers and they do fit on the length just about, I’m a bit concerned that after a little shrinkage they are going to be slightly too short.

For this (very unfortunate) reason I’m trying to find them a new loving home where another petite person can finally have a pair of tribal pants that fit without the time and effort spent to make a pair themselves or have some custom made.

They are BRAND NEW and have only been worn when trying them on to see if they fit. I am not looking to make a profit, I just want to sell them on so I’m not out of pocket and can then buy a pair that are an inch or 2 longer.

This link displays them:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350137844194&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

So again, they have a 27 inch inseam
Size Small (I’m a size 6 and they fit great but there is enough stretch for larger sizes)
Are fringe pants (the fringes are tied on either side to accentuate hip action!)
And are (deep) red in colour

Please get in touch ASAP if you want them, otherwise I’m going to try and send them back to America for an exchange within the next few days. I may be listing them on eBay in the meantime, so get in there quick before they’re snatched up!

I paid $91.72 with postage which was converted to £58.62 for them, plus I had to pay the Royal Mail £16.60 as they were imported from the US. So that’s £75.22, but I’ll round it up to £77 to account for postage. I live in London, so will only post them to people living within the UK and perhaps Europe.

I cannot stress how difficult it has been to find tribal pants with a short inseam, so if you’re also on the small side, get in there quick!!

Contact me at this email address to arrange payment and postage (or if you live in London I can come and meet you in person): m.agathangelou@gmail.com
So, I'm asking what do you folks consider essential for a dancers wardrobe?

My list is something like;
full black skirt
black choli

Sometime back I read a comment somewhere critical that dancers wore tassels. I surely cannot remember where I read it but am relatively positive it was not here on tribe. Anyway, the comment I read was that only camels wear tassels.

A few Saturdays ago in Holy Hour I was reading the Bible and ran across this, which foot noted and cross referenced and footnoted again.

In Deuteronomy, Chapter 22, Verse 12 says "You shall put twisted cords on the four corners of the cloak that you wrap around you."

This verse is footnoted with the following:

Twisted cords: referred to as "tassels" on "violet cords" in ⇒ Numbers 15:38. See note there.

Numbers 15:38 says, ""Speak to the Israelites and tell them that they and their descendants must put tassels on the corners of their garments, fastening each corner tassel with a violet cord.

This verse is footnoted with the following:

Tassels: at the time of Christ these tassels were worn by all pious Jews, including our Lord (⇒ Matthew 9:20-21; ⇒ Mark 6:56); the Pharisees wore very large ones in ostentation of their zeal for the law (⇒ Matthew 23:5).

So, it is entirely reasonable to believe it is appropriate to wear tassels if one is trying to get a ME feel in their clothing. It wasn't just for camels. :)
